I think the reason that Mass Effect 3 remained my favourite game of the year is also the reason it caught some flak: it was the end of a huge story that we were all seriously invested in. For me, that gave the whole 20-hour adventure an almost electric energy, the tingly feeling that everything had been leading up to this. For some, that meant the not entirely satisfying ending felt like a slap in the face. I didn’t feel that way. I didn’t like the actual end scene much, but it was a few minutes of nonsense among twenty hours of the best Mass Effect has ever been. That was my ending: the full scale invasion of the Reapers, the desperate street battles, the tragic deaths of old friends, the final moments of camaraderie with the ones left alive. I’d already had most of the closure I needed before the… weird bit. The history we all have with these characters, and the attachments we’ve formed with them, gave Mass Effect 3 an unfair advantage over everything else that came out this year. But it didn’t take that for granted. Despite the praise we’d all heaped on the previous two games, BioWare worked hard to do better. For me, the most important part of that was the story. It’s BioWare’s strength, of course, but after Mass Effect 2’s unconvincing Cerberus angle I wasn’t sure they’d close it out decisively. I needn’t have worried. The climactic nature of the Reaper invasion gives Mass Effect 3’s story drive and urgency, and the premise of racing around the galaxy to drum up allies gave you a string of critical decisions to make. It felt like being in charge again. The RPG elements finally clicked, too: it’s the first Mass Effect game where I wanted to continue with each class I tried. As well as being powerful and distinct, they were customisable in a much more significant way: it was up to you how heavily armed your class should be, and how rapidly their powers would recharge. Heavier weapons meant slower powers, and finding your preferred balance was the first time in the series that I got really excited about character builds. Mass Effect 2 made combat satisfying, but it still dragged after the umpteenth arena scuffle with the same enemy classes and the same low walls. Mass Effect 3’s contribution was a massive overhaul in enemy design. Every faction is completely different to fight against, and you’re fighting a lot of them. Within each army, there are intricate relationships between the enemy types that you need to disrupt before they buff, heal, or armour-plate each other. Figuring out how to combine your squad’s powers to deal with that was a shifting challenge. But maybe the most remarkable thing about Mass Effect 3 was that we were able to have any personal investment in it at all. This is a series that had been giving us hugely consequential decisions for 40 hours already: the state of the universe and most of its key players were radically different for each of us. From its first scenes to its massive conclusion, Mass Effect 3 could make no assumptions about which of your 13 companions might be alive or dead. Under the hood, it’s a nightmarishly complex web of dependencies and replacement story branches. And yet to us, the whole thing was seamlessly consistent. Everything I’d done was reflected in the ongoing situation, everyone I’d lost was gone – and the story adapted. It’s the most impressive trick I’ve ever seen a sequel pull, and it’s a big part of what made Mass Effect 3 so special. The only GOTY I'll recognize is The Walking Dead
couldn't pick any better game on this year, the amount of detail, the dedication of the developers, animators, writers deserves GOTY so far, great choice pcgamer!
I'm still confused how they turned a keyboard into a sword.

I have to seriously disagree, I think Mass Effect is the most overrated franchise of the generation if not ever. But to each their own
Apart from the last 15 minutes, I genuinely enjoyed ME3. Maybe my perception was coloured by the fact I got it for £17 with no DLC and no expectations, but I enjoyed it almost as much as ME2, and I enjoyed ME2 a lot.
There are so many games that deserved goty that are not me3
yeah no
i guess it wasn't that bad if you don't compare it to the other mass effect games i mean plot wise, gameplay wise it was a better cover shooter space man game than the previous two for whatever that's worth
This is the same Tom Francis that gave Max Payne 3 a 55/100
There are so many games that deserved goty that are not me3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_the_Year look at this gigantic list of publications and magazines that give completely different "Game of the Year" awards does it really matter that much? it's entirely subjective
This is the same Tom Francis that gave Max Payne 3 a 55/100
Okay, I have a bone to pick with that game and even I don't think it deserves a score that low.
Seriously, can someone explain to me how they turned a virtual keyboard into a sword?

A thread is made to discuss the topic.
Seriously, can someone explain to me how they turned a virtual keyboard into a sword?
same way the virtual keyboard also functioned as a device for hacking through doors and blowing people up at a distance (it's not a virtual keyboard) [editline]31st December 2012[/editline]
If it didn't matter that much there wouldn't be news. Mass Effect 3 had the best gameplay design of the series but the worst plot and character development. The catalyst was handled terribly, Earth was for some reason the most important thing in the universe all of a sudden and everyone just went along with it, the reapers stopped being scary or making any sense in their motives, etc. All in all it was poorly handled and a huge disappointment to what should have been the greatest game of this console generation.
This is a series that had been giving us hugely consequential decisions for 40 hours already
This guy doesn't know what he is talking about.
Pffft, everyone knows its the /V/GAs that matter these days.

Neverless ending sucked ass and the game didn't have much development with the characters as Mass Effect 2 did. Escape Earth. Get Friends. Kill Reapers. End
relevant
Not really.
If you never played a ME game and had no idea what to expect, it was an OKAY-Decentish game, with a bland ending. To anyone who has played ME1 and ME2 this series has come a long way down hill. I loved ME1, really enjoyed ME2 for character development, and was totally let down by ME3, seriously space ninjas:what:, so I can see just rating the game stand alone some might enjoy it more so than those who have come to expect something from the series.
This basically comes down to how much the ending did or didn't tarnish the rest of the game for you. Although personally I think GOTY should go to Dishonored.

I think if the AI was a bit more self aware the game would have been a bit more tricky, however it seems some of the time you have to walk up and wave at a enemy for them to detect you.
Edge named Dishonored GOTY. Edge: MOTY 2012
Hotline miami for GOTY everyyear. Very fun game though.
Fuck Tom Francis. He is easily their worst editor/reviewer. He ironically has a old as shit computer for being on PC gamer (AMD with a 4850 I think.) They usually task him with the indie games for that reason it seems. Though whenever it comes to big releases, you bet he will go full retard. Max Payne 3 a 55/100 and Hitman Absolution 66/100, even though he HIMSELF points out he can't run them well. Then he gives Mass Effect 3 a 94/100, so yah, he has no credibility in my book.
I have to seriously disagree, I think Mass Effect is the most overrated franchise of the generation if not ever. But to each their own
Call of Duty
IMO this year has been very poor for videogames I think if I had to make a list and pick my GOTY in it I wouldn't even choose the best game, I'd just pick the one that's the least bad I mean, the type of games that were expected to reach a mainstream audience were: mass effect 3 diablo 3 assassin's creed 3 torchlight 2 far cry 3 borderlands 2 it's all shit sequels and those are supposed to win game of the year awards the only thing that could win a goty despite having really average gameplay would be Dishonored for trying something original imo
