why does the windows photo viewer on windows 7 not animate gifs? it only shows the first frame
i really dont want to have to use internet explorer to view gifs
default it to firefox
its still annoying to have to open a browser.. my laptop with vista can see it animated with windows photo viewer
infranview works as a great image viewer replacement.
I do believe OP is asking for something to download that modifies the default windows photo viewer, and would prefer to not resort to different software entirely.
thanks for the quick replies, i will just deal with firefox i guess.. still makes me wonder as to why they would remove that feature of windows photo viewer
some copyright issue that while is supposed to be expired is not worth the risk to them
ACDSee is my current image browser. I like being able to use the scrollwheel to get through my images [sp][porn][/sp]
Windows Vista and 7 both took a few steps backwards for whatever reason, to drop "animated" .GIF support both as desktop wallpaper, and in the Windows Image Viewer.

Unisys's patents on the LZW compression in GIFs all expired in 2003/2004.

That should mean anyone can use them for whatever they want... So why did Microsoft get paranoid?

I don't know why you would want a GIF as your desktop anyway.
Windows XP didn't really support GIF's as your desktop, unless you count Active Desktop, which was just an IE window opened as your background.
I just like animated wallpapers. I'm still pissed DreamScene was killed off... fuckers. I also found the Vista sidebar useful, but 7's is retarded, since a maximised window blocks all your gadgets.

I hate how not only they killed it off but they killed it off FOR Stardock.

If I recall correctly during the beta of vista, if people reported the lack of animated gifs in the photo viewer as a bug, it was flagged as intended behaviour.
Something along the lines that the photo viewer ought to be used for organising and viewing photos and the gif format had only limited photo support or some drivel like that.
