Unauthorized access of the week: Blizzard servers breached; e-mail addresses and scrambled passwords
16 replies, posted
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today notified its players that there was unauthorized access to some Battle.net account information.
The unauthorized access included email addresses associated with Battle.net accounts in all regions, outside of China. Additional information from accounts associated with the North American servers (which generally includes players from North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia) was also accessed, including cryptographically scrambled versions of passwords (not actual passwords), the answer to a personal security question, and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators. It’s important to note that at this time, Blizzard does not believe this information alone is enough to gain access to Battle.net accounts.
Based on Blizzard’s investigation to this point, credit card and other customer payment data does NOT appear to have been accessed or affected. As a precaution, however, Blizzard encourages players to change their Battle.net password and any similar passwords used for other purposes.
Upon discovery of the unauthorized access, Blizzard took quick action to close off the unauthorized access and notify appropriate law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing and Blizzard continues to work with authorities and security experts.
Additional information regarding this matter is available on the Company’s website at http://www.blizzard.com/securityupdate
I'm surprised no-one has posted this yet. It's usually a pretty hot topic.
Odd how the companies with really strict DRM always get hit the hardest

Did you read the article? They didn't get hit very hard and what they had for security measures worked as failsafes.

this clearly scientific study brought to you by Confirmation Bias™

Only two of their games have 'really strict' DRM, being starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.
All their other games have minimal DRM
what's with all the breaching recently?
From wars been shown so far they handled it pretty well, nice to know they keep the passwords protected and that the eu / us information is almost separate

Given everything that happened with Sony, I imagine a lot of people are trying to hit the jackpot by targeting the bigger companies and services.
Why are people rating this "Winner"?

Aren't those the only 2 games released at all recently? So uh...they are definitely going to be making every game from now on with really strict drm

OOG.
Oh. Goody. Means I need to go change my password on there. It doesn't really help, in my mind, that battle.net passwords aren't case sensitive.
I created a battle.net account just last week. Good thing it only has Starcraft on it.
Did you read the article? They didn't get hit very hard and what they had for security measures worked as failsafes.
learning from sony's mistakes.
Feels like there's a password leak from big services every month.
I'm still feeling it.

You do realize the payment side of it wasn't effected right?
