Not really anything new. This is what happens when the two largest religions in a state both primarily see women as subordinates to men, and men get to decide what women can and cannot do.

'Arranged' marriages are still huge within those practicing Hinduism, which is still 80~% of the country, and those who have sex pre-marriage are seen as 'tainted' or slutty, considered shameful to their family and are often killed in what are commonly called 'honour killings'. This isn't just an Islamic practice. I understand in this case he is a practicing Muslim, but it isn't just a problem with that single religion. Edit: quoted wrong poster
