According to Gizmodo, Chung-Ang University in South Korea now considers competitive gamers the same as traditional athletes. What's more, the school is ranked top 10 in South Korea. The university will begin accepting eSports applicants starting next year, with students matriculating into the school's Department of Sport Science -- previously home to the ball sports you'd generally associate with college athletes. Now, gamers can tell their parents who nag at them for gaming that they're considered legitimate student athletes.
Posted all of Source Wonder how far this kind of thing will develop?
Oh man i cant wait to join my colleges divison III DOTA team
Dark Souls division III team PC gaming scholarship or Xbox one scholarship?
Now I wait for US colleges to start doing this and I can get an athletic scholarship
we may be fat but there's no way in hell we're going to make games 'athletic sports'
Oh shit is it real? I can't check that article in my local newspaper.
You know in some ways this is a pretty good move. I can only see it growing as a sport. Even if i cringe everytime a "pro" gamer speaks.

Yeah, Korean Gaming Association confirmed this. LOL

Is this what happened at the start of all sports before they became what they are today? As in nobody taking soccer seriously because it was just a game
pretty ridiculous in my opinion, an athlete is someone "proficient and sport and other forms of physical exercise" shouldn't flatter them by calling them athletes, maybe e-athletes..
How about chess? [editline]3rd April 2014[/editline] Wasn't that recognised as a sport by some olympic organisation?
This is.. strange. Where will the line be drawn as to who is considered an athlete? If it's from a competitive standpoint, wouldn't you be including chess players, tabletop players and wargamers? And if it's concerning the mental side of sport, then traditional sports cover both mental and physical activity - I doubt you get as much physical activity playing computer games! :v:
ethletes
pretty ridiculous in my opinion, an athlete is someone "proficient and sport and other forms of physical exercise" shouldn't flatter them by calling them athletes, maybe e-athletes..
"a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength" Note that it's or not and, meaning the definition of athlete includes pro-gamers as long as they are trained in or good at a game. Also, I believe that even if you say an athelete only involved physical activity, you can easily include playing computer games, as there is some degree of physical excerice involved, even if little. Also if you say it gaming doesn't involve physical exertion, where does the line go? Is there a point when you can say an activity does or does not involve physical exercise? And if yes where between using a mouse and keyboard and lets say golf do you define that line? All a golfer does is every 10 minutes or so hit a ball, and it is the finesse, not the brute physical strength his skill is measured by, what a gamer does is make many precise movements of his fingers all the time for 30-40 minutes, is that not physical exertion?
The argument of sports being a physical activity is incorrect these days. Gaming is a sport of the mind.
How do they even know who to accept? Where athletic sports only have a handful of leagues, anyone can put together a league or tournament for games. I guess it'd have to be something that's recognized by the school?
everyone's good at something i guess

those keyboard clicks sure are making me crave another red bull

youre pressing buttons and moving the mouse that's physical exertion

gamers exert force on their anal sphincter when they get really serious in games; real pro gamers learn to control the sphincter in tense online actions. Athletic eh? But yeah; e-thlete sounds hilarious

Everyone who knows anything about e-sports knows that if you've played in The International or Dreamhack you're notable in the scene. [editline]3rd April 2014[/editline]

You're saying chess isn't a sport? Also just putting it out there that "the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services now recognizes League of Legends pro-players as professional athletes"
yeah also wrong, they might be sportsmen but they certainly aren't athletes..
Are you saying that it's your opinion that it's wrong or that it is factually wrong? Because I'm pretty sure that a League of Legends player got a Athlete's visa as several sources claim.
This is only acceptable if the ref has the run around and throw cards about, and the players have to fall out of their chairs and roll about when they die, hoping for a free respawn [editline]3rd April 2014[/editline] Players also have to be stretchered off for wrist injuries
I don't really care what is and isn't considered a sport, I just think video games are meant to be fun enjoyment/escapism and they probably should stay that way. That's not to say that people haven't been using video games for tournaments since their creation but with the addition of games like LoL and DOTA to the pool of games that are advertised as competitive from the start, I feel like it's going an unnecessary step away from having fun with it.

Football was just a recreational activity, and now it's one of the most watched competitive events in the world.
That doesn't mean it should happen to video games!
That doesn't mean it should happen to video games!
But why can't people do it? There have been games designed around competition between players with minimal if any story behind them for a long time now, now the "pro" scene is growing rapidly.
"e-sports" as a whole is one of the most hilarious things ever imo, the gaming industry wants to be taken seriously so badly its funny.
Are you saying that it's your opinion that it's wrong or that it is factually wrong?
