I've been reading it would be released september 19th, but I can't find it. My friend got a 2g ipod touch today and asked me to jailbreak it, but when I tried to down the firmware to 2.2 or 3.0 I get an error.
Is there any way to jailbreak the 3.1.1...?
Yes, but you have to be running jailbroken 3.0 first. Just downgrade it to 3.0, jailbreak it with redsn0w, then use the latest Pwnagetool if you're on a mac. If you're on a pc, downgrade to 3.0, jailbreak with redsn0w, then wait for the windows release.

I think you can just download a pre-hacked IPSW and restore/update with iTunes.

Yeah, but you still have to be on jailbroken 3.0 to upgrade to jailbroken 3.1.1
I tried like 10 different ways to down it to 3.0 and each time I got an error. I just told him that it isn't possible to jailbreak it yet.

1. Download 3.0 (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware and choose the "iPod touch 2G (3.0/7A341)" option. Click download and choose the first google search result.)
The file name should be "iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw"
2. Open iTunes
3. Put your ipod in DFU mode. To do that:
- Turn it off
- Hold down home + power for 10 seconds
- Release power button and keep holding down home
- It should pop up in iTunes as an iPod touch in recovery mode
4. Shift + click on the restore button and choose your firmware file
I've done that, when it's on "Preparing iPod" it gives me an error.
Wait nevermind you can't downgrade the ipods that comes with 3.1.1 out of the box
So I was right in telling him that it's impossible at this point until they make a jailbreak for 3.1.1?
There is an exploit for the G3, but I'm almost 99% sure it isn't released yet.
It's a 2G, but it still has the 3.1.1 firmware. IIRC the 3G only comes in 32gb and 64gb.

My G2 came with 2.0 out of the box when 2.2 was out for a month, so his has to be a G3.

Why do you keep putting the 3 after the G? The second generation was called 2G, the first was called 1G, and all the other models follow the *G format, what makes this one special?
Also, my friend specifically asked for a second gen iPod touch 8 gb when he bought it.

I don't want people to be confused and say "LOL THE 3G IS A PHONE DUMBASS" and consistency always helps

No. It's a 3G. Check your model number in Settings>General>About. If it's MCO86LL, then it's a 3G, even if it is an 8gig

No 3G is a service provided by phone companies, the iPhone 3G is the third gen iPhone, that also has 3G Network support. And how can you say "Consistency always helps" when you become inconsistent with the 3G Touch by calling it the G3?

The iPhone 3G is a phone. Hence 3G. You can see why calling something an iPod Touch 3G would make people who are idiots say that the Touch isn't a phone. And consistency is when you do the same thing over again; it's like how I shower and brush my teeth every morning, consistently.

3G=Third Generation\The service offered by some cell companies.
And consistency would apply to following the same pattern for the name of each new model. The first gen was the 1G, the second gen was the 2G, so if you're being consistent, the third gen would be the 3G.

I'm the one being consistent in how I speak, not Apple. Is that so hard? I just want to be able to clearly discern between the phone and the iPod.

I know that, but you said it's helpful to be consistent, while being inconsistent. You're being consistent by calling it the G3 all the time, but being inconsistent by calling it the G3 while all of the other ones are *G, and the next one will most likely be called the 4G.

OFFICIALLY they are named *G. For clarity, I call it G*. I don't know how many times I need to reword the same phrase to get you to understand.

Which doesn't matter when you jailbreak it because it's a 2G which uses the 2G exploit

Except it does, because all 3G's come prepackaged with 3.1.1 software, and as such can't be downgraded to 3.0, which means you can't jailbreak an 8gig 3G iPod touch yet.

How about an 8gig 3G shipped with 3.1? Is it downgradable?

Not yet. A jailbreak is coming out for it hopefully in the next day or so. The devs are awful perfectionist.
3.1.2 is realeased, i guess they have to start over again with jailbreaking it :D.
Damn, 3.1.2 seems to fix some problems that I think I have.
I'm on jailbroken 3.0.1, any hope for JB 3.1.2 any time soon?
Oh, and iPhone 3G.
