Source - Torrentfreak
Earlier this week, anti-piracy lawyers ACS:Law had their website taken down by a 4chan DDoS attack. Adding insult to injury, owner Andrew Crossley was harassed at home in the middle of the night by prank phone calls. Now, through a fault with his website, hundreds of megabytes of private emails have been exposed to the public and uploaded to The Pirate Bay. To those hoping that this is a MediaDefender-type fiasco all over again, trust us – it is.

So how were they obtained? “Their site came back online [after the DDoS attack] – and on their frontpage was accidentally a backup file of the whole website (default directory listing, their site was empty), including emails and passwords,” a leader of the attacking group told TorrentFreak. “The email contains billing passwords and some information that ACS:Law is having financial problems.” Financial problems? Interesting. Many tens of thousands of people who received letters from ACS:Law are also experiencing the same problem, having already paid up several hundred pounds each to make non-existent lawsuits go away.
And surprise surprise, they're crooks! Here's how much money their extortion racket was pulling down, in a letter to a monitoring company:
You are going to receive on average about £1,000.00 per 150 letters sent. This can be seen from the first tiny batch. Because we have good quality product being monitored and captures are high on the data we have, when the letters get sent out the figures therefore equate as follows:- Phase 1: 2,500 letters, estimated revenue to you: £16,666.00 Phase 2: est. 4,000 letters, estimated revenue to: £26,666.00 Phase 3: est. 18,000 letters, estimated revenue to you: £120,000.00 That is data collated to date! I have more titles to give you, more data will be captured. Please stay with this.
For those who don't know, ACS:Law are the guys in the UK who send letters to suspected file-sharers demanding they pay up or get sued, despite having little to no evidence against them and absolutely no case. But they hope the victim doesn't know that. This is an ongoing story, so keep checking the source for more information.

I imagined pirates attacking a website and making off with chests full of emails.
I think I'm gonna start going on 4chan now..
This has made my day...now all I can do is sit back and watch as their screw ups get revealed.

4chan to ACS: "U MAD?"
i'd have to say this is a definitive instance of "Owned"
It's things like this that make me think karma exists sometimes.
I imagined pirates attacking a website and making off with chests full of emails.
Made me think Monty Python. Can't find a video sadly.
So that ACTA thing never happened right...
So that ACTA thing never happened right...
yea what the fuck happened to that anyway
yea what the fuck happened to that anyway
EU said piss off, and then it was gone.
I imagined pirates attacking a website and making off with chests full of emails.
Yep, that's pretty much exactly how it went down.:yarr:
who would have thought something 4chan possibly did for the lulz would turn up a covered scam from a potentially reputable company, makes me wonder how much more of this is going on.
who would have thought something 4chan possibly did for the lulz would turn up a covered scam from a potentially reputable company, makes me wonder how much more of this is going on.
The average person probably knows 1% of what is actually going on in the world. Refer to wikileaks for proof.
epic hax.
Next time I get a court letter, I'll be charging up my Ion Cannon, thanks /b/
It's things like this that make me think karma exists sometimes.
Call me a huge hypocrite, but how does trying to stop piracy, which is stealing no matter how you look at it, end up as being bad karma? I suppose if you look at it that they're trying to milk people for money, but honestly.

Holy shit. These ACS:Law guys are monsters. I hope the actual law does something about this. EDIT: Actually, apparently they are being brought to a disciplinary tribunal. http://torrentfreak.com/file-sharing-lawyers-to-face-disciplinary-tribunal-100823/
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/piracy-is-not-theft.png[/img_thumb] :eng101: I don't really need to say anything, the image does it for me.
The image is retarded though. You copy something that does not belong to you. You have no rights to copy it(copyright laws). You can call it whatever you want, but it's illegal and hurts developers. Virtual goods =/= physical goods. People spend time on making whatever they're making and then sell it for money. But you copy it for free. It's ok if 1 or 2 people do, but if everyone copies for free, developer gets no profit. That's why we have to suffer DRM, because piracy is not theft, thus it's OK.
The image is retarded though.
Disagree with something, call it retarded. A well-made counter-arguement. It's only illegal because of the dipshits in charge right now.
Ohhh man, this news is like sweet honey to my nipples.
I think all this argument about piracy not being stealing is just an argument on semantics
