You just activated my trap card: Visa and Master Card block US-sanctioned Russian banks
International payment system Mastercard has stopped serving clients of seven Russian lenders, after the US issued sanctions against it regarding Russia’s position over the Ukrainian turmoil.
Rossiya Bank was blocked by both - Master Card and Visa, and with the latter also cutting ties with Sobinbank, SMP Bank and Investcapitalbank.
Seven Russian banks are involved in the suspension, according to Timur Batyrev, the head of the national payment system department at the Central Bank of Russia.
The blockade came without warning, Rossiya bank said.
"The management of Rossiya understands the difficulties of clients in the current situation and will do all it can to solve them," the bank said in a statement.
Oh shit, is this something that will actually cause some damage? I don't know what cards they use in Russia...

Well I'm sure Russians aren't really happy about this, so it will cause some damage
OP source is RT, but this article by the BBC (which I just posted in its own SH thread) mentions the blocks further down in the story.
this is an unexpected and substantial detriment, right?
That sounds like a pretty big deal.
It would be helpful to get the testimonial of a Russian FP'er on exactly how inconvenient/far-reaching this is.
I read that as "Visa and Master Card block US-sanctioned Russian Blocks". I thought Visa/MC had blocked the blocks the US had put in place to block russian people of interest accessing their accounts. That'd be a whole new can of worms.
Sorry to my fellow Russian FP users
Nothing stopping you from going to your bank and getting cash though, so unless you only shop online, you'll be fine

I've lost the ability to grasp political cartoons that aren't Polandball.
Thanks, Internet.

Burning bridges is an English saying for breaking down relationships, the comic is saying that they're just harming our relationship with Russia I guess? But I feel like that relationship was kinda shot to begin with when they illegally invaded a country

I basically bring my MTG cards wherever I go :v:
And I do run into a reasonable amount of people who play it too
I feel like the sanctions the US put in place aren't really affecting russia as much as they're affecting russians who have nothing to do with the crimea incident

That's the case in every scenario with economic sanctions. Didn't work with North Korea or Iran, why would it work with Russia?

It plays on the assumption that the government cares enough about it's people to stop doing whatever 'negative behavior' it is performing so sanctions will be lifted. Russia is not one of those governments.
Those are small private banks close to government or whatever. No harm for us common people yet afaik.
Generally speaking, US is punishing so called "friends of Putin"
I found it very satisfying how Putin immediately squealed about "Россия" bank and ordered Central bank to support it. Kovalchuk probably called him and told to fix the bullshit he's done. Some of these "friends" I doubt even Putin can fuck with.
