My older brother works in the R&D department for Uber.
He told me they're not really trying to perfect self-driving cars for their services but rather to be the first to make and to license them out.

you realize that if another company perfects this, implements their own ride sharing, and refuses to license to uber that uber is extinct, right? uber needs this tech and they need it first in order to survive. uber licensing out this tech doesn't make any sense when they'd be the primary user of it.

Yeah I am aware of how much Uber needs this.
I was just trying to clear up that their intention was not to use it for their services primarily.
