For decades, it's been the gold-standard treatment of mental health disorders: maina: schizophrenia, major depression.
But now, lithium, the third element on the periodic table and an essential constituent of soil, oceans, and every living organism - is being heralded as the next fluoride: an additive with such theraputic potential, it should be ingested by millions of Americans every time they pour a glass of drinking water.

Personally, i dont think they should go along with this, seeing as they're pretty much drugging their citzen's water supply
Wouldn't bother me, I'm on an artesian well. Too far out of anything big enough to be a town for public water. Come to think of it though I could benefit from some lithium. Surprised I'm not already on it. :v:
The voices tell me this is a bad idea
there might be some people that might not react well to lithium, could be only 1 in a million people but still
don't drink the water, they put something in it... to calm you down. I don't even remember how I g- actually I'm feeling pretty mellow..
I wonder what kind of health problems this could bring.
The voices tell me this is a bad idea
Remember to drink lots of water
I'm sure they wouldn't add it without extensive testing.
Fluorine had the same reaction from people. That seems alright.
To be fair, lithium in drinking water, naturally occurring, or added artificially has been shown to have a moderate effect on lowering suicides and amount of crimes committed. The amount added (70-170 micrograms/L) is safe too.

But do you have a real source?

But people with heart disease shouldn't have much lithium intake in the first place

i guess you guys want me to add a better source
okay have this one from BBC

Out of curiosity, what would likely be the other component to the lithium. Or will it be straight up lithium? They usually bind metals with other compounds to make them dissolve easier in solutions.
The only problem I see with this is how expensive Lithium is, how much would this cost?
Would this, you know, cure my mental disorders?
Because I don't want to start drinking some random chemical...

Lithium is a metal.

Thank you captain obvious.
Doesn't lithium, you know explode in water?
Well, how's it gonna affect those who.. drink water anyway, not worried about benefiting off lithium or something?
But other than that, it don't seem bad either. I suppose it's just healthy, but you gotta study that shit.
Thank you captain obvious.
I'm using the internet.
This might be good. People say the government does this to control us.(Conspiracy theorists of course). I think it's good that the government tries to help us like this.

Trying to calm the population is what caused the Reavers in Firefly/Serenity
So just to be clear: the government are genuinely considering putting drugs in the water to make people more docile?
Holy shit.
Doesn't lithium, you know explode in water?
Which is why I'm inquiring about what would be the other chemical counterpart. Salt (NaCl) for example dissolves in water quite well, and if you know about the chemistry involved the particles literally break apart and it becomes a solution of not combined Na and Cl. Obviously there aren't any explosions with when put salt into water, but if you were just to put Na in there there would be. I'm guessing the process would be the same with Li. I could make some guesses as to what compound they may be using, but I really don't know.

Fucks sake it's to lower suicide rates

Not really:
The Japanese researchers called for further research in other countries but they stopped short of any suggestion that lithium be added to drinking water.
It also lowers crimes committed so it obviously makes people more docile
Something that changes personality shouldn't be added to the drinking water
Trying to calm the population is what caused the Reavers in Firefly/Serenity
Well, what they used in Serenity was some chemical similar to LSD. While Lithium has no chemical reaction in the human brain, it is thought to bring about changes via transport of monovalent or bivalent cations in neurons, or activation of gene expression. It also interacts with Nitric Oxide, which plays crucially into neuron plasticity.
My only concern, is that this may interfere with people who are already receiving lithium treatments.
Lithium exists naturally in spring water, we've evolved to rely on it. The lack of lithium in tap water could very well be one of the reasons for why depression-rates and mental disorders such as alzenheimers and schizophrenia have gone through the roof during the past hundred years. The government putting lithium in the water is not an evil plot, it's not some drug that makes you docile, it's an important mineral we need, just like vitamins and whatnot. They're simply re-adding this mineral to better mimic natural spring water and mineral water.
Umm.. How about we just have regular unmodified water? You know, the natural kind? Filtered is okay but we shouldn't be adding chemicals to tap water, especially since people are paying for it. Just because it 'may' be good for you doesn't mean that it should be added to water supplies. I'm more concerned about fluoride and other additives, lithium is fairly natural so I doubt it would have too much of an impact.

It may also reduce the amount of homosexuals
oh and it's natural etc etc ( lithium that is, not homosexuals )
