• Smoking set to be banned nationwide in the Philippines
A nationwide smoking ban is set to be implemented across the Philippines, replicating rules currently observed in president Duterte’s former jurisdiction, Davao City, where he was mayor. The new rules, which have been drawn up in an executive order and are awaiting the president’s approval, will see all public places across the country – indoor and outdoor – become smoke-free areas. “What is being done in Davao is set to be done nationwide,” health secretary Pauline Ubial said, the Manila Bulletin reported. “There will be nobody smoking in public places anymore, whether indoor or outdoor. Parks, bus stations, and even in vehicles. All these are considered public places,” the health secretary said, adding that the executive order is expected to be signed this month. The move comes two weeks after president Duterte re-stated his plans to ban smoking in the Philippines, claiming that it brought diseases to both smokers and non-smokers, the Philippine Star reported.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/smoking-nationwide-ban-philippines-a7354066.html
Christ duterte just does not know when to stop
As long as someone isn't breathing smoke right in your face, it only harms the user. Why ban it other than just to make people think they are doing something good?
unless I'm reading this wrong, smoking is only legal in your own house? seems like it might actually increase levels of second hand smoke because the smoker can't leave the house for a puff, to me
That... actually not a bad idea. You know what, he actually has a point on this. Smoking needs to be banned in public spaces. All public spaces. You can do it at home, I do not believe this would outlaw that so in my book that is perfectly reasonable. Is a garden considered to be public though? I'd think it would be private I guess unless it is like a balcony. Title is wrong by the way, I see that it says in public spaces.
Well, I guess we'll see how effective this is gonna be
Smoking is bad for you, and smokers have the annoying tendency of not cleaning up after themselves - that is, cigarette butts EVERYWHERE. This is a good thing.
Edit: fuck misread, shoot me please.
Smoking is bad for you, and smokers have the annoying tendency of not cleaning up after themselves - that is, cigarette butts EVERYWHERE. It should at the very least be banned for indoors public places. Outdoors is a bit more debatable, I'd still lean towards yes because sometimes places can be packed and there's plenty of evidence that in both situations it's quite harmful.

Get rid of that madman.

Good on their health secretary, it's a disgusting habit that affects everyone exposed to it. They need to heavily restrict advertising and push alternatives to tobacco products (like gums and patches) as well. Can't fault them for this. Maybe they'll move on alcohol next.

no no you see it's only about hard drug users i normally don't bring up the slippery slope argument but the direction they're taking here is clear
Based on what he's done so far are we going to see corpses in the street with "TOBACCO SMOKER" signs left next to them.
Reason is the lack of ashtrays/disposal cans in areas where people often smoke. Honestly though, more personal freedoms for a bit more litter is a good trade-off.
1.67 billion pounds of waste each year is not a "little" more litter.
Outdoors public smoking only bothers me if it's at places where people have to gather for long periods of time closely together like at a bus stop. It's annoying that if I want to get away from a smoker at a bus stop I'll have to either get up from my seat or move away from my spot losing my place in line. Most smokers don't do this because they know how shitty it is but there's always that one asshole.

And lol no, I always see shitloads of cigarettes around bins and ashtrays.
Bus stops will finally become habitable again.
1.67 billion pounds of waste each year is not a "little" more litter.
probably cause every fucking place is removing receptacles.
Smokers stink, literally, their clothes smells of smoke . And when I enter a room where people smoke I have no other choice than to wash all my clothes since it smells of smoke.
You guys remember the prohibition? I think that's enough proof that this isn't going to work.

You can't take 2 steps in any parking lot in the states without seeing them on the ground. I can't walk on the beach without seeing them in the sand. Smokers think the entire world is their ash tray, not because there aren't enough places to dispose of the butts, but because they just don't care And to those saying unless they blow smoke directly into your face it isn't harming you... I can smell that shit from hundreds of feet away, winds depending, and it physically closes my throat, which I have to deal with every time I need to go to wal mart to get groceries. I have to walk past the drug addicts outside the doors unable to breathe
You guys remember the prohibition? I think that's enough proof that this isn't going to work.
except it's not like US prohibition telling people that they can't do shit in public isn't the same as saying they can't do it at all.

Whenever I smoke, I try to find some designated smoking area (there's a lot around where I work), and if I can't, I find somewhere out of the way. Usually more than 100 feet away from a building or in the parking lot by my car. If I'm somewhere like that, and there's still non smokers by me, I try to stand downwind of them. When I'm done, I flick what's left of the tobacco onto the ground and put it out, and either put the butt in whatever receptacle is nearby, put it in my pocket until I find a trashcan, or throw it in the bed of my truck. I feel like that's more than considerate enough, and if you're still offended by my smoking with the measures I take to be polite, then you need to relax and worry less about what people do with their bodies.
You guys remember the prohibition? I think that's enough proof that this isn't going to work.
Smoking and drinking are in no way similar. If people drank like they smoked, they'd get thrown in jail for public intox.
Smoking and drinking are in no way similar. If people drank like they smoked, they'd get thrown in jail for public intox.
why would you make that comparison at all after declaring they're not similar
