Project Gustav is Microsoft Research's answer: An artist-friendly GPU-intense multitouch-and-Wacom-tablet-based natural painting program. Sure, there are geniuses—including possibly one or two on our staff—who can make masterpieces with Illustrator and Photoshop. But the logic of Gustav, named after Klimt and Courbet, is that the training required to get good at those apps limits artists trained in traditional physical media. What this does is re-create the analogy of real oils and pastels, not just in how they stream but in how the colors blend. In fact, to make a new color, you do what you'd do in the real world, blend your paints together. You can use pens on a Wacom, twisting flat brushes them to achieve swirls and calligraphic flourishes. But you can also reach up to draw on the multitouch screen, the little HP screen shown in the pic. I am not much of a visual artist, but for a research project, this is a gorgeous execution of a very natural experience. I didn't want to pull away from my own hideous oil, so God knows what a budding Leonardo could do. Bye bye, MS Paint. It's been, uh, swell.
My brush just became more stiff.
As an artist I now have a raging brush.
Exciting.
What's with all this "project ___" shit anyway?
Wow that's awesome, but the graphical elements seems annoying. Yo dawg, we just put a pen inside your screen so you can use a pen while you use a pen.
colour blending? i hope to god they put in a picker
Wow that's awesome, but the graphical elements seems annoying. Yo dawg, we just put a pen inside your screen so you can use a pen while you use a pen.
It's called art.
project gustav sounds like a sinister plot to build a lot of bombs or something
Photoshop CS5 will rape this
project gustav sounds like a sinister plot to build a lot of bombs or something
Sounds more like a major project to remaster that huge cannon they made, into something that launches 25 Megaton nukes or something.
My brush just became more stiff.
Me too, oh hey, how about we have a contest to see who's brush is stiffer. I'm sure I'll win. :smug:
How about remaking paint for PCs that people use first
Looks like Artrage 2.
Photoshop CS5 will rape this
Because comparing bundleware/freeware with a $500 piece of software, is realistic.
MSPaint has always been the pallet of simplicity
Because comparing bundleware/freeware with a $500 piece of software, is realistic.
I don't think CS5 is going to be that cheap...
project gustav sounds like a sinister plot to build a lot of bombs or something
It was a defensive line in Italy. awesome
do want all other painting tools i've used are AWFUL. digital painting is so fakey and annoying to do. photoshop, especially, is one of the worst i've used. the only real option you get is to just put your opacity to about 22% and airbrush the fuck out of the picture. NOT USEFUL
I've heard Zbrush isn't too bad for painting, although it isn't know for that.
it's OK. Not really "painting," though. [editline]11:17AM[/editline]
Wow you sound so bitchy. Artist makes the tool, not the other way around.
i don't see why talented people have to go though the effort of doing digital painting when they could use this but i'm sure at the end of the day it's going to be extremely limited like songsmith. great program -- use it for just about everything -- but it's just basic midi samples and you can't really change the tune. it'll sound the same the entire way through that seems to be microsoft research's big thing: make cool apps but they're extremely incomplete
My brush just became more stiff.
My brush just ruined my pants. :aaaaa: I think I'll go and change now.
what the fuck is this shit wow what the hell wrong thread this looks cool i don't know what just happened
My brush just ruined my pants. :aaaaa: I think I'll go and change now.
White acrylic is so hard to wash out.
It's just stuff that already exists put together, nothing new at all.
They should call this MSPaint and MSPaint MSDraw.
They should call this MSPaint and MSPaint MSDraw.
I prefer Gustav.
