Extract:
PETROLIA, Texas (AP) — The human remains found last month in a shallow grave in rural North Texas have been identified as those of a missing U.S. Army soldier.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office says Spc. Jose Ramirez is the person found near a house south of Petrolia, near the Texas-Oklahoma border.
Ramirez went missing from Fort Sill, Okla., in 2005.
Sheriff Kenny Lemons says Ramirez likely died sometime in summer 2007.
According to a criminal complaint, 30-year-old Justin Green told relatives he shot Ramirez “because Ramirez did not believe in God” and had reached for a gun. Green was arrested last month and faces first-degree murder charges. He remains in jail, where officials did not have attorney information for him.
Three others are accused of tampering with evidence.

This is an abhorrent and inhumane crime..
So, let me sum it up.
Somebody doesn't believe in your god, god who, no matter what, preaches that it's never too late for person to change and begin believing into him, and EVEN IF THEY DON'T, HE STILL APPARENTLY LOVES THEM.
So you go and shoot a person who doesn't believe in your god. A person who could have changed, but you stripped him of such chance. A person your god loved, regardless of their belief.
I am pretty sure that if there is a kind of person that would make your god sad, it's you.

I'm not too sure there's any reason to get riled up over it because any sane person probably already recognizes that any kind of murder is already overstepping boundaries mate

God only loves you unconditionally if you follow some strict conditions.
Theologically speaking,
Mr Green still has gold seats through the pearly gates, whilst Ramirez burns in hell for an eternity.
No matter how good you are, it's by faith not works.. (John 14:6)
Pinnacle of immorality right there..
I am utterly speechless.
RIP Ramirez 2009-2012
clearly the guy was a militant intolerant atheist and deserved it

I would sooner declare my atheism in the middle of a Taliban outpost than in rural Texas. I'm less likely to be shot.

hmm?

He's fighting for religious tolerance overseas.. militant? no shit, he's in the military, and he's probably proud of fighting religious extremists overseas who subjugate women & are intolerant of other religions.

alright, if you say so
hmm?
I'm not too sure I'd trust Mr Green at this point. He's already shown himself to be willing to kill, I doubt lying is beyond his ethical restraints.

you're wrong, but texas is up there.
hmm?
athiests have no morals, so him holding a gun is a recipe for disaster!
watch the media not cover this since atheists are the most distrusted group in America, and many viewers would be turned off or even offended by the story
Gods work has been done. God Bless America.
Heh. 'Merica strikes again.

Agree
You're not a Christian you sick son of a bitch.
So to put this plainly, this is just another case of a person acting like they're the defender of God and killed someone? Other than Green saying Ramirez "didn't believe in God," is there any other proof that he was Athiest?
For all we know, Green could be lying his ass off to reduce his sentencing. I may be wrong, but I'm assuming Ramirez probably wasn't Athiest or it didn't matter to Green and he killed Ramirez for another reason and used the religous argument as a cover to hide his true intentions.
I assume it would change the degree of murder he would be charged with, and that's a matter of years in prison from their lives, something I doubt anyone is willing to give up. Something doesn't seem to add up properly or there isn't enough information at hand.
We were reading about this in class the other day because the town is close to us, and this story is more wild than a national article lets on.
They brought several friends over multiple times to see the dead body and bullet holes, and even used the dead man's credit card to order pizza.

I don't think Green's smart enough to think this far through, mate.

That's fucking sickening.

You'd be surprised to see how well someone can plan a murder and use an excuse to lessen their sentence. He knows he's caught, now he just needs to play it off so he can get less time pent up.
Really though, don't put it past a murderer to think through everything beforehand. From First to Second Degree murder is a decent downgrade in years, and there's no reason to think he isn't a conniving asshole who thought this through.
Boy it would be really tactless to sarcastically say "but guys, militant atheism is just as bad as militant theism". And it might be even worse to point out that even if the murderer is lying about his reasoning for killing the victim, it will still lighten his sentence in a Texas court, because even if Green isn't a militant theist, murdering an atheist is seen as more acceptable, and that's as much as problem as the killing itself.
Hypothetically, I mean. I would never say those things, because that would be intolerant. Or something.

ah, man. can't say I know anything about that

The book also says not to judge lest to be judged himself.
So many plotholes.
