Disney and Pixar have today announced that Finding Nemo is getting a sequel. Finding Dory will arrive in US cinemas on November 25th, 2015, and (as you may have guessed) will follow the adventures of Dory, the helpful if somewhat absent-minded Blue Tang from the original movie.
My thoughts:
Pixar, you bunch of lazy fucks.
I recently graduated with a degree in animation, and it was the former artistic masters at Pixar which inspired me to take it up. Toy Story blew me away as a kid, and at 23 years old I enjoy it as much now as I did then. It's aged beautifully, the visuals leave a lot to be desired, but the storyline is timeless. Pixar always had a beautiful talant for creating compelling characters and storylines... shit, Wall-E doesn't even have dialogue for the first 47 minutes and it's absolutely stunning storytelling!
But now... I just can't help but look at Pixar as a corporate machine. The magic is completely gone. As soon as they announced Cars 2, it was the beginning of the end. John Lasseter himself said that Cars was a mistake, and that his love of nascar blinded him... but the Cars franchise became their most profitable yet thanks to the incredibly successful merchandising. Lo and behold, they made a cash in sequel. My heart sank.
The next thing that really pissed me off was when they announced a re-release of Finding Nemo in 3D. What the fuck? Since when did Pixar give a shit about gimmicks like 3D? ANY re-release of a 2D film in 3D is nothing short of despicable in my opinion... I'm a full supporter of 3D films, but there's absolutely no reason to re-release old films (which have usually been terribly converted) and charging full admission for them. Shortly after this, they announced the prequel to Monsters Inc and what was left of my respect for the company evaporated.
Up and Brave were decent... Toy Story 3 was great, but there's without a doubt been a serious decline in the quality of films and the commercial tactics by Pixar. It used to be about the art, but how anybody can deny that this nothing but a cash in is beyond me. The fact they have some original scripts in production is irrelevant. I'd like to see them concentrate all of their efforts on original work.
This sequel will NEVER have the same charm, magic, charisma or storytelling prowess that Finding Nemo had. What's the point in making it.
Look out everyone Disney's at it again with sequels! *dives to nostalgia bunker*
For me it's okay that they do this, they tried to make an original movie (brave) and was meh. If they live off sequels but it's still good quality I don't care.

Finding Nemo is an overrated movie though so :I
damnit Pixar if you're gonna make a sequel, make one for the incredibles, it definitely had room for one
ah well, I'll just keep my collection of everything up to Toy Story 3, and leave it at that.
But in all seriousness, Nemo seems like the worst choice for a sequel. It had a straightforward story that got all wrapped up (Nemo is lost > they find him), great character arcs (Marlin is a happy-go-lucky guy > tragedy strikes > he's stiff and paranoid > the plot strikes > he overcomes his fear of danger and emotion > he's a cool dude again), and honestly didn't really leave room for expansion.
In my opinion, Pixar's greatest strength has been the non-human focus of a lot of their movies. In Toy Story, they had toy problems - they wanted to be played with, they were scared of being thrown away - that related to human problems - jealousy, neglect - but had that toy spin on them. The Incredibles had superhero problems - balancing alter-egos and superheroics, raising superpowered kids, learning to leave the old days behind while focusing on the new.
Cars had car problems - you probably could rewrite the script to be about a racecar driver in a small town of people, but by making McQueen himself a car we feel closer to the story. I feel that Cars 2 failed because it didn't need to star automobiles, and definitely not the talking cars from the last movie.
For me, the deciding factor about sequels/prequels/tie-ins has always been "Was this a story that needed to be told?" I like the thought that the best ending is "...and they had many more adventures." - we've seem them get through this challenge, struggling and growing along the way, let's leave them now. Dory was a great character, to be sure, but I just don't see how this story is necessary or compelling.
Pixar has only made two films after Toy Story 3 but I still don't like where Pixar is going. I hate to be that guy that says the 'Pixar Golden Age has ended' but I just can't help myself with the movies they have planned. 'The Good Dinosaur' sounds okay.
Edit: I might be in a minority but I still think Up was one of their best films.
I can't wait for Monster's University though, might be good.
Up and Toy Story 3 were so awesome. I had already heard that Cars was pretty meh and didn't watch Cars 2. Then Wreck-It Ralph was announced and I thought it was a Pixar movie because I didn't even know Disney had other animation studios. I watched it a week ago because I was a huge Pixar fan and heard good things about it. The movie was really awesome as every Pixar film I had watched until then was and only during the credits did I realize that it wasn't actually a Pixar film. I googled a bit and found out that Pixar made Brave, not Wreck-It Ralph. I thought, well if Wreck-It Ralph was so amazing, just imagine how good a real Pixar film could be and then it was just boring and generic. :(
I don't have high hopes for this.
I'm a complete and utter Pixar fanboy and I really don't understand why people dislike their sequels so much. I loved all their movies so far, including Cars 3.
So I'm looking forward to this!

Yeah, sure, it may not be "as good" as the first movie, but I find Pixar and it's animations absolutely stunningly amazing and always have. So I believe in them.

Cars has been marketed and merchandised continuously since 2006 because, hey, kids like toy cars. That doesn't bother me as much as the fact that (besides Toy Story 3 and Brave) every Pixar movie since Cars has had barely any marketing at all. I can name ten different cars that have toys. I can't name ten WALL-E toys, period. I can't think of a single toy from Up.
Also, Lasseter said that his inspiration for Cars 2 came when he was traveling the world (or at least the Europe) promoting Cars and found himself imagining how Mater would react to the different places. That's a funny idea for a few shorts, but a full movie starring the comic relief character? There's a reason they're called the comic relief - they're not meant to carry a whole story.

I thought Brave was pretty good (I would have preferred something more like this trailer) but I thought Wreck-It Ralph was absolutely fantastic. That Academy Award was a joke - I guess the Academy prefers Celtic mythology to vidya gmaes.
I'm excited for this, I mean it's not like they'd be riding the ad/tie-in toy wave that late, is it? This actually seems like something they want to do for a reason other than piles of money.
Besides, Finding Nemo is like my favorite Pixar movie.
I thought Brave was pretty good
They just threw a bunch of cliches in a blender and animated whatever came out. It's a princess that doesn't want to be a princess (done hundreds of times already) and she gets a wish and it's taken too literally and it backfires (done hundreds of times already) and then everything works out great and the great difference is resolved (done hundreds of times already). And that's it. There isn't really anything else to Brave. That's the entire movie. Three cliches combined into one very meh movie.
I thought Brave was visually stunning, best part is the opening 2 minutes when it's just landscapes. That's about it though.
Brave was a very average movie.

Tell me more, Time traveler.
Gees, "The Incredibles" ended with a cliffhanger 9 years ago.
Sure could use a sequel to that movie.

They made a GameCube game that had the story of the sequel
Seems like Pixar and DreamWorks are trading roles, what with How to Train Your Dragon and all that.

For a moment I thought the one where Mater becomes a secret agent and travels around the world were two different movies, but I forgot they were the same. So fine, I meant just Cars 2.
Finding Dory could mean more of "Finding out herself, who she is" over than her getting lost.
Sure that may play a part in the movie, but I think we'll be taken on a journey to find the real dory.
But I dont give a shit about Dory or who she is... she's a comic relief character and doesn't need or deserve her own spinoff sequel.

I'm a Pixar fanboy too, but I never thought of sequels as really being their "thing".
I like them telling original, new, magical stories. But lately it seems they're only sticking to sequels of all of their big hits.
I really really hope they don't fuck things up like they have been recently; Dory is my all time favorite animated character. Don't ruin it by trying to show us where she came from, that would completely ruin her charm for me. Great characters tend to just fade into existence. No one asks what Luke Skywalker was doing as he grew up, because it's not important for the story.
I hope it's just another ocean quest and not "DORY GETS LOST SEARCHING FOR HER PAST" but I already know it will be.
Incredibles Sequel
Please
Maybe a prequel about the first Super? That'd probably be the only good Origin Story
Why do i feel like Pixar is going to be like Valve, but instead of Half-Life 3/Episode 3, it's The Incredibles.
Why not shit out a sequel to A Bug's Life, Ratatouille and Brave while you're at it.
