Washington (CNN) - Rep. John Dingell is making history, as he becomes the longest serving member of Congress in the nation's history.
On Friday, the Democrat from Michigan will have served 57 years, five months, and 26 days, breaking the record held by the late Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia.
Dingell's office tells CNN that the congressman plans a quiet lunch with family and friends, with larger celebrations planned for next week.
President Barack Obama congratulated Dingell in a statement Friday morning, saying the congressman has worked "tirelessly" for his constituents.
"Michelle and I send our warmest wishes to John and his family, and I look forward to congratulating him in person at the White House next week," he said.
Why the shit is anyone allowed to hold power for so long it's possible for them to develop dementia?

Because people keep voting for him.

A former board member for the NRA and fights tirelessly against gun regulations. He supported the Vietnam war thinking it was ever a good thing to start with. And of course, standard for most politicians, he can't hold his tongue or choose the right words.
The harsh fact of the matter is, when you're going to pass legislation that will cover 300 million American people in different ways, it takes a long time to do the necessary administrative steps that have to be taken to put the legislation together to control the people.
A politician should do whatever necessary to avoid the phrase "control the people", but hey, maybe that's just me. He still supported Obamacare and most social welfare reforms, so he's a liberal democrat. Can't really give a guy crap when he cares more about environmental regulations and ensuring toxic waste isn't dumped in the open, so he's pretty alright in my book.
Despite whatever values this guy fights for, it's a major problem when anyone is allowed to stay in Congress that long.
It's a really flawed system when you think about it.
In my opinion there should be term limits just like the presidency has.

Here he is with Kennedy. This is when his career basically started.
