• Kentucky Congressman makes bill for "Amexit": America's self removal from the UN
Rep. Thomas Massie thinks it’s time for “amexit.” The Republican congressman from Kentucky renewed his call for America to leave the United Nations Saturday, days after citizens in the United Kingdom narrowly voted to leave the European Union. Massie, referencing the Brexit vote, suggested it might be America’s turn in a post on his Facebook page Saturday afternoon. “Time for ‪#amexit‬?” he wrote. “I'm a cosponsor of H.R. 1205 to get the US out of the UN. ”
http://www.kentucky.com/latest-news/article86159202.html :hammered:
I'm fairly well-educated on what leaving the EU means to a country. I have absolutely no fucking idea what leaving the UN means to a country.
I'm beyond sick of this bandwagon. I know nothing will probably come of it, but we're part of the UN for a good reason.
wtf Absolutely every single country on the planet except the Vatican and Palestine is part of the UN
I'm fairly well-educated on what leaving the EU means to a country. God Dammit Fox News, There the ones who said that Britan left the UN, not the EU.
And I just remembered the headquarters is in fucking New York
If we left the UN, the UN would lose roughly 22% of it's annual funding/financing.
This is one of those things that should result in them giving your congress seat to, I dunno, an irritating yet ultimately harmless clown or something.
No one is going to take this seriously its a dumb idea
I'm fairly well-educated on what leaving the EU means to a country. The Soviets learned that by flipping the table they lost the ability to prevent the UN from acting against their interests
It amazes me that people this stupid manage to remember to breathe, let alone get into positions of power.
I have a better idea. Why don't they relinquish their permanent seat in the Security Council to another country? Say... Canada for instance.
Why are right wingers so stupid
I can see why someone would consider getting out the EU but why would anyone want to leave the fucking UN? "Yeah let's have no representation in the organisation that literally every other recognised country is a part of."
Some of the comments on the article are pretty funny

Eh, maybe it was both reasons together.
No one is going to take this seriously its a dumb idea
That's what a lot of us said about leaving the EU and look where that got us.
Completely fucking dumb idea, America would lose so much of it's influence, who let this guy into politics. Israel would be ultimately fucked too. What even is this guy's reasoning to leave the UN it's not like the UN stops America from doing whatever they want.
“As a member of the UN, we bind our citizens to decisions made by undemocratic countries, when in fact our constitution should be the supreme law,”
What bullshit, the US can veto whatever the fuck comes up in the UN, the US won't do anything for the UN unless it wants to, there's no sovereignty lost in the UN. This is exactly why the veto power was created, so these major players don't feel threatened by being in the UN and want to leave.
I'm baffled. Is this man really saying "Us too?" ...Except we aren't part of the EU so he picks the next worldwide thing we're a part of. Because that makes sense.
Amexit? Really? He's not even trying
We're already part of the Security Council. Why would you even leave at this point?

The court argued that it's decision is binding whether or not the US chooses to defend itself (like in real life courts). In the end, America does what it wants.
Rep. Thomas Massie got what he wanted out of this stunt, 15 minutes of fame and his name in the international news cycle for a day.
The UN is pointless, so not like it would make any difference. But then again, I am a warmongering neocon.
Why would we leave? We hold so much power over it that no matter what the UN says we'll still in the end do whatever the hell we want. Leaving would empower Russia and China as well as castrate our global power for no other reason than maybe "m-me too!"
Why are right wingers so stupid
Because they're immensely afraid of change and refuse to live by the standards of a changing society. Look at the current GOP. The main reason they've lasted the past 20 years is because they're still riding on Reagan's wave of popularity, trying to apply policies that never worked to a society where they would work even less.
Someone, please give me my brain cells back.
We would be removing ourselves from our permanent position on the UN Security Council, meaning China and Russia will have a lot of free-reign in international conflicts.
Which is the real bitch of it, he's right in saying it's an undemocratic organization but I don't think he realizes our presence is poisoning that well. Part of the reason why I hate the UN is how easy it is for us and all the other big powers to abuse their positions, and how any serious resolution is a formality because anyone strong enough to do anything will do it anyway. Back in 2003 the UN didn't support us going into Iraq, we did it anyway, just like we did a lot of shit no matter how much the rest of the world didn't like it. Having the support of a resolution is the geopolitical equivalent to getting a card that everyone signed, it's a nice thought but ultimately means nothing. None of that means we should leave though, the UN provides an institution to organize a lot of international efforts and good things do come out of it. Leaving that because this guy doesn't like hearing foreigners bitching about what we're doing is stupid, it's petty and just causes more problems.
Why are right wingers so stupid
Probably for the same reasons left wingers are stupid.
