I went to look up some traffic laws and lo and behold, the NHTSA is down.

So do these go down very often or what?
What the hell do these errors mean (well i obviously know what a 404 is but everything else)
Never seen a government site go down before (probably because I hardly check them), so I'd say it's uncommon.
4chan hacked them I bet.
It's all those Chinease hackers I bet.
Commie hackers.
Its the ruskies taking down our government's computer network.
I guess its uncommon, this is temporarily obviously.
Not very often, you'll have better luck with .com sites.
Not very often, you'll have better luck with .com sites.
Because .com is more trustworthy than a .gov since we all know it matters.
.gov is less likely to have viruses, but won't go down without some persuasion.
I heard China has been hacking U.S. government sites lately.

Their party van got a moving violation so they DDOSed the traffic laws site?
being .com or .gov has nothing to do with how easy it can go down/be ddos'd or anything like that. it all depends on the person running the site/hosting the site and their security/knowledge in these types of things

well it's basically .com's are more likely not to have a IT department whereas a .gov usually has paid specialists.

its a domain.
the hackers are using passwords

gj, kramer
.gov websites aren't going to have viruses on them unless they've been hacked. DNS services only register .gov addresses for the US government, that's why you don't see a bunch of fake government websites.
As far as I know, at least, I could be completely wrong.
The local government websites all were down when the snow hit earlier this year. What happened was effectively a DDOS except people were legitimately flooding the site trying to find information on school closures and road closures.
They seem to go down whenever there is sufficient traffic on their website to do so and whenever anything important is updated on the website.
Go down?
I don't know what you're talking about... :ninja:
Are you suggesting its a conspiracy that government websites go down rather than them going down because their servers suck?
It's a website. Individuals are involved, whether government or not. Some individuals aren't doing their job properly or can't for whatever reason, so you see the result there.
Happens pretty rarely, but it does happen.
Shows that private firms /can/ be more organised than the government.
.gov websites are usually hooked up to a Hamster based power source, .mil is where it's at.
