• Otomata - Make music in a 2D grid (cellular automata)

A friend just posted this on facebook. It's very cool.
http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata
The basic idea is that you make squares which bounce off of the sides of the area and make notes, when two hit, they change direction, resulting in different notes being made. More info is on the page. Here's a demo - You can even share links with others with your songs, like this: http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=0w8e8906121y7u752n2p6a613x3f5g5b http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=0q06868q2q6q4q264666 http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=4f5l4b3j5o6c302h Just thought I'd share this with FP. Post links of any cool things you make.
I'll check it out

very calming. And no matter how hectic it seems to get it always seems to sound good Edit: Was experimenting: http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=2v022y6g2i7v3y5v341g82
Awesome, bit like Andre Michellles toy. I like how it evolves over time though.
whatever you do it sounds good!
I know it's difficult to create something like this but after playing around with it for awhile making various shapes/images, it all starts to sound the same.

I'm an artist give me all of your money http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=0u1q2o4x8y8y [editline]18th April 2011[/editline] basically any random stuff you put in it will generate some rather cool music

Apparently if you hold down space it goes faster or something. :v: [editline]18th April 2011[/editline] Wow, look at what my creation has become: http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=14737t1i3c5h5x3g325u7b1f I swear this was just a normal pattern before.
The notes on the top are D A A# C D E F A C, the notes along the sides are the same, reversed. Symmetry :3 And since it's part of a scale, the scale used with hang drums, it'll always sound good! Musical theory, bitches. Actually it says that on the page in the FAQ..
Cool little toy! I salute you. Reminds me of SimCity 4!
At first I was like, "what is this guy talking about?" and then I clicked a few squares and I hear exactly what you're saying.
http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata?q=1h2c1h2c1j1d1d1j7c Why do mine keep breaking like this... Works if you take out the lone block too [editline]19th April 2011[/editline] Screw your music have some silence http://earslap.com/projectslab/otomata/?q=2y3p7a6g65511n2x3j4f5l4b2y3p7a6g65511n2x3j4f5l4b
