• Putting younger brother on the internet, want to make it "child-safe".

So I've decided since my younger brother is entering the age where emailing and IM's his friend will be a pretty big thing, I want to hook his PC up to the internet... BUT! I want to restrict his access to websites. He'll be sharing the PC with my (yet younger) brother, and I don't want anything on there that neither of them should see. Can anyone recommend me some software to restrict access to certain sites? I don't want to use openDNS as that would cut off websites for everybody connected to the net.
Don't.
Well for one if you have a roter most of them can block sites ( but mine can only handel up to 200 ) You can set it up were only that pc will use opendns you also need to keep in mind that 1) its a good idea to be around him if you want to make it safe 2) Site blocking will only make him want to get it even more most likely so if you can make it look like a 404 page and just say the internets messing up I had some sofitwere but i forget the names and the cds are long gone if i remember it i'll let you know
Don't.
Don't what? Restrict websites? put him on the net?
Im fairly sure he ment puting him on the net [editline]18th November 2010[/editline] http://www.childwebguardian.com/ Its 1-2 licenses: $29.95 If your looking for free - they suck balls and a 8 year old can get around them also i'd install a timer and retric when they can use the net / basic account
Well I see no definite reason why not to... youngest is 12, and the one I'm thinking of putting the net on for is 14... Since the 14 year old will be going to college in a few years, I want him to learn to use the net for research, he's very anti-social (due to his autism), so I'd like for him to at least make friends online. I'm just worried about the 12 year old seeing any unneeded materials.
Ah well... thats not THAT young :P I was looking up porn at 11 :P But i understand What kind of content are you wanting to block ? Tip: Block google images
Mostly pornographic (youngest brother is extremely sensitive, he once saw a censored sex scene on a DVD and cried for days because of it... very strange) I'll be running their PC with a bandwidth limit (75KB/s down 15KB/s upload) to prevent them overwatching youtube videos and wasting bandwidth. I'm also considering setting up comodo anti-virus, for the sandbox technology.

Did I do good? On a serious note, I'll add those websites to the router blocklist. Is it possible I can enforce google's filter with a password?

Pic of what my router blocking can do ( it only looks for things in the address bar ) Do you have something like this for the whole network ? Its a good backup to have Incase the soitwere fails at caching something
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Works wonders.
Overprotective older brothers. You're like a parent who blocks websites for their kids. This is stupid. My cousin is 11 and he browses uncensored net and seems to be ok.
Yes I have that, I'm on a netgear dg834G with a second dg834G set up upstairs on a network switch. I've used it to block a few websites, but it's more of a last effort thing as I need to know what websites he's tried visiting before I can actually block them.
Show him 4chan. Everything beyond that can't be child harming after that.

[editline]18th November 2010[/editline] Let me put my intentions across simplistically I don't care if my 14 year old brother browses porn/etc stuff. What I don't want is for my 12 year old brother to see this stuff, and then freak out (And I know he will!).

I started learning Java at the age of 12, through the internet. I don't see how 12 is 'too young' to use the internet. I know you want advice on the software you should use, but I'll give you this advice: If they see anything they don't want to see, it's easy for them to close it and never go back. If they want to be watching porn at that age, it's alright. I'm quite sure that most of us had seen it by then. You're being overprotective.

I don't want to be overprotective, I just don't like the idea that my 12 year old brother WOULD freak out if something pornographic flashed on the screen, even just seeing a topless woman sends him into screaming and shouting fits. If there was a way I could limit them both, so the filter was only on for my 12 year old brother, I would. He's always been over-sensitive to such things. [editline]18th November 2010[/editline]
Malware popups disagree :v:
That's why I'm planning to use some form of sandbox anti-virus, so they know they can safely close it off, or restart the PC, and it's gone. You want to restrict your younger brother? My now twelve–year–old brother has been on the internet before he could write. He's not especially scarred. That is, the internet isn't really that horrible if you don't know where to not go.
Really this is very stupid. If you protect him from stuff like that he will always be sensitive and never grow up.
I think his brother has some mental disorder or something
A few of my brothers and sisters where born with problem/disabilities. I was born deaf in my left ear. My eldest younger brother has schizophrenia Second youngest brother was born with Autism and my youngest brother was born with major growth problems (his organs are growing, but his skeleton isn't.) My sister whom directly has nothing wrong with her, was born a twin, her twin however died at birth. I guess that means we're a family of retards.
If you don't want him to be a total sod don't restrict anything.
No matter how hard you try, one way or another they'll see porn somewhere. I suggest you just watch over them while they're on the internet and limit them to certain hours or something. I guess you could try some of the paid services that regularly update their database of blocked sites. [editline]18th November 2010[/editline] Also put some Remote Control software on there so you can monitor them from another PC if you don't wish to be stood around looking at Runescape or Neopets for 4 hours..
I first used the web at about 7, dial-up, those were the days. When I was 8, I got a Windows 98 box and a WiFi stick, which I loved to bits. All I did was look up TV shows and play boring flash games. Anything even slightly pornography was closed instantly, and I didn't give a shit as I did all the boring shit an 8 year old does. Basically, depending on maturity, there is no need for a filter at a young age unless the child is stupid as shit.
