I swapped out the two Samsung 512MB RAM sticks that I had in favor of two new 1GB Patriot sticks. Even though they should be fully compatible with my system, the new RAM actually decreases my PCs performance in some areas, such as games. On the startup screen and in system information, it says I have 2GB of RAM, yet my computer runs much better on the old sticks.
RAM: (old) 2x 512MB Samsung K4H560838D-TCB3 DDR 333 PC-2700
(new) 2x 1GB Patriot PSD1G333H PC-2700
Motherboard: Micro-Star MS-7104 version 20A
Yes, I'm a little uneducated about hardware configurations and such.
Yes, my computer sucks.
Make sure they're running in dual channel mode.
Just because the new and old RAM are PC2700 doesn't mean they'll have the same throughput. Check the timings on the memory (usually in the format of X-X-X-XX, eg. 5-5-5-15. lower numbers are better) If the new memory has higher memory timings than the old sticks (eg. if the new sticks are 5-8-8-24 and the old are 4-4-4-12) then the old sticks have a higher throughput bandwidth.
If you can't find the timings or don't want to, you can get memtest86+ (www.memtest.org) and it will tell you the RAM throughput in MB/s.
I'm running in dual-channel mode, and they have the same memory timings.
When I swapped out my memory, the BIOS didn't adjust and it was trying to make the new sticks run at the same timings as the old ones. I assume this could impact performance.
Check what yours is doing, and adjust if necessary.

I'll try that and hope it works.
