• How does the GTX460 compare to the GTX470, ATI5770, and ATI5850?

Apparently a new GPU has hit the market with the GTX 460 for a reasonable $200. I was going to get either the 5850 or the 470 for my new setup which I will be building in 3 weeks, but now this comes in and changes the game. Apparently the 460 can easily overclock to where the 5850 is, according to some reviews. It also kills the more expensive 465. So how does it compare with the stock clock, to the 470, the 5850, and the 5770? There is a list of reviews for it in the following link: http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-becomes-everyones-favorite-midrange-grap/
I would say the the 5770 is a bit better than the GTX 460. I got a 5770, I love it. I can play all games on high. Crysis, Crysis Warhead, BattleField:Bad Company 2, all Call of Duty Games (including Modern Warfare 2) I prefer ATi over Nvidia because they are a lot more powerful for a lot less. I don't run duals or anything, just a single graphics 5770 with AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition with 4GB Ram and Windows 7. I love it. In my opinion, use the 5770 is better.

And alot of what you said depends on what resolution you play at. If you play Crysis at 1024x768, ofcourse you'll be able to run it on high. ( I play it at 1280x1024, everything at high and 4x AA, with an average FPS of 40. But don't expect to be able to play Crysis at 1980x1080 with 8 x AA and everything at V-high on a 5770. It's simply not possible. Well, ofcourse it's possible, but it'll turn it into more of a slideshow than a game). However, the 5770 is far from being a bad card.

So is it better to get a 460 then a 5770?
So is it better to get a 460 then a 5770?
Yes
I guess I'll get a GTX470 for the extra $100. I'm going to wait for the waters to calm, since this release is likely to make ATI lower its prices, which will probably make NVIDIA lower its prices as well.

In reviews I've seen the stock cooler allow for a 260mhz overclock. This bench shows that SLI 460's are in the GTX 480- 5970 performance range. For 100$ less than a 480.
Which one is better, the 5870 or the 470?
Which one is better, the 5870 or the 470?
If you look at a bunch of benchmarks, there's very little FPS difference, and the 470 is $80 cheaper. Get it.
Not to derail, but do you guys think the 460 could run on a Cooler Master ~400 watt?
Not to derail, but do you guys think the 460 could run on a Cooler Master ~400 watt?
Depends on the rest of your specs, and exact model of the PSU.
Depends on the rest of your specs, and exact model of the PSU.
Well it is this PSU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171046&cm_re=cooler_master-_-17-171-046-_-Product I am also running a AthlonII dualcore, 4 gigs of RAM, 1 HDD, etc. I'm not actually purchasing it now, I just want to know if it would run on it.
It should be enough. But I'm far from sure.
It should be enough. But I'm far from sure.
I guess if when I upgrade with Christmas money I would need to get a new PSU too, or I could just get a less power hungry card.
I guess if when I upgrade with Christmas money I would need to get a new PSU too, or I could just get a less power hungry card.
Or you could just wait... and get a better PSU and a better card.
Not to derail, but do you guys think the 460 could run on a Cooler Master ~400 watt?
i can tell you this from experience, you will need more power. i bought the MSI GTX460 OC, and it boots just fine with the antec 420w PSU that comes with the nsk2480 (htpc case), but you get stability issues in games, i got 12 minutes into Civ5's tutorial before locking up. but general lockups will occur before that IMO, depends how much stress you put on the rails beforehand. my setup's a Q6600 (on E7AUM-DS2H mb) with 2x2tb HDD + LG bluray drive and a former HD5770 that had no drama previously. admittedly, i knew 220-300w load would be a problem, i just wanted to tempt fate and see how it went (for physx/cuda again). pretty much everything in newegg's feedback fits, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127510 where i can just swap in a HD5770 i had before and have no drama, i think the PSU would need 500-600w just for 12v rail stability. which i might do later.
