It may not be a household name, but it is one that has made history. Rinderpest - the German name for cattle plague - has felled herds of cattle across the world for centuries, causing human famine and economic disaster. Veterinary epidemiologists announced this week that it had been eradicated - something that has happened to only one other disease in history - smallpox. The eradication will have an enormous effect on the health of animal life, and food security. Al Jazeera's Jesse Mesner-Hage reports.
Source It's a short article, but a great thing.
:science:
Stupid scientists condoning genocide against innocent microbes.
fuck microbes
fuck microbes
They really are dicks.
fuck microbes
yeah i can imagine yours is small enough to do that
Great success, two down and only a mind boggling large number to go.
I mean yeah it's good that the disease is gone, but something just rubs me the wrong way about this. It's not like it's a sentient being we eradicated, but we only have so many different forms of life on earth, it almost seems like a crime.
yeah i can imagine yours is small enough to do that
ive got a couple trillion microbes in my ass right now
Who cares the humans got on top, we are staying there and we will damn well stay there until the end of time.
Time doesn't end, since it's a fictive thing we've created based on the cycle of earth, the sun and the moon.
Viruses (or virii) can be hardly considered lifeforms.
That's true, but keeping them around can still have some scientific merit. Even if it's just in labs.
Time doesn't end, since it's a fictive thing we've created based on the cycle of earth, the sun and the moon.
Doesn't matter. We have a manifest destiny to colonise space, and make nature our bitch.
Time doesn't end, since it's a fictive thing we've created based on the cycle of earth, the sun and the moon.
Tell that to GPS satellites.
That's true, but keeping them around can still have some scientific merit. Even if it's just in labs.
Actually, they do keep them around at the CDC, they just keep them frozen and same goes for smallpox.
That's true, but keeping them around can still have some scientific merit. Even if it's just in labs.
what if we kept HITLER around??!?! hmmmmmmm???
what if we kept HITLER around??!?! hmmmmmmm???
Maybe we could learn from him how to build a successful economic infrastructure.
what if we kept HITLER around??!?! hmmmmmmm???
the russians have him. well his remains anyway
Stupid scientists condoning genocide against innocent microbes.
I heard PeTP are already protesting outside hospitals.
Doesn't matter. We have a manifest destiny to colonise space, and make nature our bitch.
What happens if we run into aliens?
What happens if we run into aliens?
we must teach them to live a civilized life
Maybe we could learn from him how to build a successful economic infrastructure.
Yeah, all we have to do is start a world war to put that infrastructure to use.
Time doesn't end, since it's a fictive thing we've created based on the cycle of earth, the sun and the moon.
Lets fictively end it.
we must teach them to live a civilized life
With steel and cordite.
Jesus won't like this.
Science: 2, Jesus, 1,000,000,000
You're next, Polio.
Time doesn't end, since it's a fictive thing we've created based on the cycle of earth, the sun and the moon.
Well, you could say it ends when the sun and moon end. But in a sense you are correct in that it doesn't have a definite end. I consider when the universe implodes (Assuming it will collapse back in on itself) as the mark of the end of time; as this would be the end of time/existence in this universe.
Didn't we eradicate Polio too?
