Hi, I'm at my dads for a week or two, so we've started putting down his kitchen floor. Thought i'd do a little build log whilst I'm here, and show some progress :) Tools Used Circular Saw Trowels Hammer Hand Saw Shims Belt Sander Hand Sander Nail Gun Other Stuff Used Tea - COPIUS AMOUNTS OF TEA Wood Stains Wood Resin Wood Glue Bricks in a bag Day One Been hand staining the wood to put down on my Dad's floor. We've got about 25ish planks done already, going to start laying one half of the floor tomorrow. We're going to raise one half of the floor by 2 inches to match up with the other, and move the step up further down the kitchen into the hall (i'll post pictures tomorrow). Little tough because the floor isn't level as it's an old farmhouse, the tiles underneath are all wonky and off and we've got to screw down joists to raise the floor on one side, which don't match up with the other half of the kitchen. It's a bit of a mess really. I'll post the pictures of it in general, from start to finish. Day Two So today, we cut down all the wood for the supports over the tiles. We've stained some more wood, and we've planned the support areas and are getting ready to glue and nail it all down tomorrow. Here are some pictures :) My dad cutting some of the supports [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/210020_10150551438045355_561645354_18077333_2033390_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] More support cutting [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/209492_10150551437940355_561645354_18077330_6738002_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] A shot of some of the floor boards we're going to put down [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/209116_10150551437785355_561645354_18077326_7527787_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] The kitchen so far (all hand built) [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/204259_10150551437860355_561645354_18077328_3298881_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Planning the supports [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/194570_10150551437890355_561645354_18077329_641211_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] More floorboard shots [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/194098_10150551437745355_561645354_18077324_3662628_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] And more [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/193990_10150551437825355_561645354_18077327_7371192_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Finishing some supports for the day [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/193646_10150551437995355_561645354_18077332_982627_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Hopefully will get some of the boards down tomorrow and we'll have half a floor! REVIVAL! Necro: Floors nearly done, will be posting pictures in the next couple of days :) EDIT: Heres some shitty photos. :) It creaks a tiny bit because the wood hasn't "bedded in" yet and is still rubbing against the other pieces, and it has yet to be varnished, but I think it still looks pretty awesome :) Still as yet unfinished, but its 90% of the way there. :)
I've never seen anyone put a floor down using 'real' wood (as opposed to factory produced packets of flooring).
I've never seen anyone put a floor down using 'real' wood (as opposed to factory produced packets of flooring).
I don't know where OP is, but it's really common in America.
That kitchen is beautiful, loving it. All hand built? Must've taken quite a while, I'm impressed. Looks like it could be a really nice floor, though not as shiny as the rest of the kitchen. Unless I am missing something?
Yeah it's taken about a year thus far, my dad suffers from bi-polar disorder so between trips between doctors and nurses and building it all with no labourers or help he's done well. :) Also the floor hasn't been varnished yet, so it will become more shiny then.
I've never seen anyone put a floor down using 'real' wood (as opposed to factory produced packets of flooring).
Yeah it's slightly uncommon, but my dad got the wood really cheap from B&Q on offer, something ridiculous like better than half price a pack. I'll post a picture tomorrow, but the actual flooring that your supposed to lay is the OTHER side. It's actually some kind of pine, but it's utterly revolting, so we're staining the side that was orignally supposed to be face down. Because of this though, there are lots of machining flaws, but it looks weirdly nice with stain.
I don't know where OP is, but it's really common in America.
UK. Thanks for the comments guys.
Wood floor in a kitchen?
Wood floor in a kitchen?
Yes. Pretty common imo. Todays update : Glue the floors down, progressing well, 4 out of 8 done, leaving it to dry and see if it holds enough for us to continue. Messy work but the gluing should be done today hopefully, and the boards can start going on tomorrow or sunday, depending on how long it takes to dry and hold up. Pictures: Holding the boards down with bricks in bags, classy ;) [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/201556_10150552625110355_561645354_18085952_6361283_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Wood Glue [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/201328_10150552624950355_561645354_18085948_1900331_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] Nom nom Glue [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/209115_10150552625010355_561645354_18085950_2693922_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] More bricks in bags [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/210096_10150552625055355_561645354_18085951_3753935_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] aren't you all lucky ;)
why have you left the tiles down? are you not supposed to rip them up first?
why have you left the tiles down? are you not supposed to rip them up first?
too long of a process to lift them all I think. We'd have to reset the whole floor and relevel, and we don't have the money or time to do it really :P I said the same thing, but my dad said we can just screw the supports down and glue any other bits down to create another 'floor' in essence.
Cool, fair enough then. wasn't criticising you, just wondering myself incase i'm ever faced with such a challenge.
didn't take it as a criticism :P its a time saver really. this kind of tile, and the amount of grout and cement underneath would take loads of time to clear out, then relevel, so that's why we're not bothering :)
I would have been tempted to screw those boards down so you could crack on with the other stuff without waiting for it to dry. Any reason you didn't? Pipes underneath etc? [editline]8th April 2011[/editline] Or dust maybe :x
You're gonna polish and varnish it up though, right? :v:

[editline]8th April 2011[/editline] Or dust maybe :x
try drilling through real old ceramic tiles ;) Basically, using anything but diamond drill means when you start drilling through it, the ceramic becomed red hot and brittle, actually gets harder to drill through and completely blunts the drill. My dad went through 6 steel drills trying on the other tiles in the back room, so pretty much chucked that idea out of the window. There are also pipes underneath, but we know where they are, the whole problem is the drill bits.
You're gonna polish and varnish it up though, right? :v:
Oh course ;) More Pictures: Old floors - impossible to level [IMG_thumb]http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa347/benf199105/200853_10150553037635355_561645354_18088949_6306016_o.jpg[/IMG_thumb] LEPROSY! I went through the hell of trying to drill through porcelain tiles. Wouldn't recommend it. You could have smashed the tile and fetched it out where you were gonna screw. Glue works though, it's not going to be going very far anyway since all the pressure on it is in one direction. Down.

Down.
exactly, there's also about half an inch of concrete below the tiles aswell, so it wouldn't be time effective hehe. Basically the only way to defeat procelain is to turn the drill speed down, WAYYY DOWN, like as slow as it will go, and take about 15 minutes drilling each hole. And yeah, glue works pretty well since all the weight along with all the pressure will be spread by the groove and tongue system and any weight will be straight down, so yeah, it's looking good. Update: Just finished glueing every last one down, now we have to sit and wait for them all to go tacky and grip the wood so it doesn't move alot. Sunday will be the day we lay it, and we should get it finished, but if not monday sometime.
Welp, project abandoned for now. We need more wood stained and i've got to go back to my mums. Basically now, the floor needs aesthetic planning, i.e. my dad needs to stain the 50m(square) of wood to find ones that sit well together, and colour the same. So pretty much all the hard work has been done, all the struts are down, and all thats left is to stain the wood. So, i'll bump this when I visit again and get some wood down finally. Sorry all!
DisOpointed
That kitchen looks really nice. I am really digging the counter-tops and cabinetry.
Maybe it is just an American thing, but kitchens in the USA are always tile or linoleum floors. Easier to clean and cannot be damaged as badly by getting wet. Maybe Americans are just terrible at cooking and spill things all the time.
I'm an American and my kitchen has a hardwood floor. In fact the whole first floor except for the bathroom is wood.
Weird. What part of the country do you live in? My house has wood floors in every room except the kitchen and the two bathrooms.
I have wooden flooring in my kitchen, but will probably tile it once it gets fucked up from all the splashes.
Weird. What part of the country do you live in? My house has wood floors in every room except the kitchen and the two bathrooms.
New Hampshire. It's pretty well sealed so spills and stuff don't affect it.
Ah, gotcha. I live in California so most buildings here are pretty "new"... Even my house was built in 1942 and it is considered "old" around here. All the ugly new developments have tiled kitchens.
My kitchen has a linoleum floor because my parents couldn't even afford a full set of furniture when the house was built nearly 30 years ago.
DisOpointed
me too, i wanted to get it down :(
