Since Battlefield 3 will be coming out in a few months I want to be able to play it to it's full capability or at least close to it. Anyway my budget is 275 USD.
Here's my current specs:
AMD Phenom II X2 555
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
MSI 870-G45
768 MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
977GB SAMSUNG
650 Watt PSU
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3
Well you could blow that money now, or wait for Bulldozer in a few weeks and CPU prices will fall.
About the only two things you could upgrade without going over are the CPU and RAM:
Phenom II x4 970: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103894
G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231427
That'll run you $174, minus shipping and tax if applicable.
Just get a 955 instead of the 970, anything above the 955 is a waste of money; and I also don't see the point in an extra 4GB of RAM for gaming.
You could add in a second 460 768MB and get an X4 955, if you can find a 460 768MB..
Well when is this bulldozer cpu brand or what ever coming out?
According to various news sources, Bulldozer should be out in early September (like the 13th I think.)
Another 460 and wait for bulldozer.

is what I could find, it's a shame you didn't want to upgrade last month, Asus were selling 460's (768mb) for $90 refurbished with a three year warranty and newegg
for $100, deactivated now though..
No idea if the 2nd PCI-E expansion slot on your motherboard (x4) will bottleneck a 460 768mb though.

I would think so.
Either way, the performance difference will be definite minus a 5-10% loss due to the bandwidth, then in the future he can always get a new motherboard.
There's a couple of 460 768mb's on ebay for $100 or so, might be worth checking that out.
