Nick Clegg describes effect of violent video games as "incredibly powerful", but says use can't be l
Speaking on his radio phone-in show on LBC, Nick Clegg has warned listeners of the “corrosive effect” of violent video games on children, using the recently released Grand Theft Auto 5 as an example.
“Even for very small kids they just get very wound up with these games so you have to try and ration them a bit,” said Mr Clegg. “Clearly these games can have an incredibly powerful, and I suspect in some cases corrosive, effect on someone’s behaviour, someone’s outlook.”
The topic has also been raised in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Washington Navy Yard base committed by 34-year-old Aaron Alexis. Friends of Alexis told reporters that he played violent video games, a fact that was connected with his actions on the 16th.
Oh god, just shut up Clegg, nobody cares what you think.
And if you would please present your evidence?
However, he also admitted that there was no easy solutions to what he describes as the problematic connection between video games and violent behaviour: “It's incredibly difficult to know in a free country what you can do. We can't limit use by law or by edict.”
i think games can make someone a bit grumpy if they're not very well-made (i.e. very poorly balanced multiplayer games, etc.) but it's not like that's exclusive to video games, and it's certainly not enough to make someone commit a shooting.
although i will admit that the question of why we play these kinds of shooty games where we brutally murder dudes is definitely an interesting one that should be explored seriously. but that should be done by the games developers and players themselves, not by media watchdogs.

People play violent games because it's easier to make decent game mechanics out of it
Here's the full video of what he said: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZk4UtMIKLQ#t=20m53s
He basically says there's not much you can do to limit how much adults are playing the games they've paid for, and with children it's up to the parents to monitor them. He also says his children play Minecraft and it's 'ingenious'
Well Nick Clegg can gargle cocks for all anyone cares, he made himself irrelevant last election.

Fucking piss-yellow journalism.

i mean from a plot and character standpoint
Ive played GTA and Mortal Kombat since i was 4.

ROCKSTAR!
Nick Clegg or not, he sounds like he has the right idea at least. His kids are no older than 11 so it only makes sense to moderate their usage of video games - and he's taking the initiative himself rather than declaring a crusade on violent games like many other politicians.
The Lib Dems would do so much better in opinion polls if they booted Clegg out.

It's too late, they have already proven themselves to be weak and untrustworthy.
UKIP will take their place as the third party.

No they won't, they'll be as piss poor as they were before Clegg.
Oh my fucking god I just asked my grandma "why do they always connect these shootings with Gamez" and she fucking blew up 'well some people think of that stuff as real life and get caught up in it'!
I think we know what demographic they're targeting, and its working.

If by "someone" he means kids, then I think this is a pretty reasonable statement.
Guys, I just played Half Life 2 and now I find myself throwing cans at police. What do I do?

Report to the gherkin in London for immediate re-education
Civil protection teams have been dispatched
Sure, blame an unruly child's behaviour on video games, anything to keep parents as voters.
To be fair, video games have had a profound effect on me, though in less of a "hue violence is cool and i wanna do it' and more of a "ok violence happens in the world, i can't be so terrified of it all the time"

But is she wrong? In general, the issue is very young children and the mentally unstable.
I know that when I was little, I was always pretending i was Sam Fisher with my friends. It's very apparent that games will have an effect on you.
I find violent video games a great way to blow off steam, instead of blowing off a persons head in real life I can easily simulate the same through a video game.

I fucking hope not, or my first election's choices will be right-wing, pretending-to-be-left-wing-but-is-right-wing-anyway, or stupidly-right-wing. Or the there-aren't-even-enough-of-us-to-make-a-majority party (aka every other party).
Its not violent video games, It competitive video games which bring out aggression in people but the same thing happens with anything competitive, Wheres the call to ban all sports? nowhere go away
And if you would please present your evidence?
Although it isn't exactly evidence, but many of our recent rampage killers were no strangers to the internet and the video games, like say Lanza and Breivik.

You sure that was games and not just watching news in general?
Besides, this is about video games turning people into murderers, not if games have an effect on people, they do just like every other medium.

I pretended I was a Pokemon trainer.

Who today doesn't know about the Internet and Video games?

What I'm saying is that these notorious persons were part of some gaming demographic more than anything else. Many people even on Facepunch can relate to them a bit I'm sure. The lifestyle of gaming, isolation and social pressure etc. are some the key things that led them into doing what they did.
does he realize they can actually use violent videogames to help treat PTSD?
