• Thinking about dualing it up...

So I have a 1 GB GeForce 9800 GT graphics card. I'm not an expert on graphics cards by any means, but I have been told by a coworker that it may be worth it to buy a second graphics card of the same model rather than a completely new one. From a cost standpoint that seems like the logical choice but I'm not sure if it's worth it. (Especially since the card is over a year old.) Anybody have some strong opinions? If dual graphics isn't optimal, alternative ideas or suggestions are always appreciated.
SLI 9800GT's perform slightly better than a GTX260 and sometimes up to the point of a GTX 275. Depending on your budget getting a second 9800GT could be a good investment.
Make sure your mobo supports SLI, also, SLI disables dual monitors.
You would be better off buying a newer graphics card. SLI doesn't always scale very well.
How much are you willing to spend CWestfall? That'll help us figure out what would be best.
Op why don't you post the rest of your specs to see if there would be any bottlenecks?
How much are you willing to spend CWestfall? That'll help us figure out what would be best.
Right, forgot to mention. I'd prefer not spending more than 200 CND. (~185 USD I believe) If it would substantially improve performance I could go as high as 250-300 CND. I'll have to grab a list of specs, I don't know them all off hand and I'm on a netbook right now. I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit with 8 GB of RAM (Seemed like a good idea at the time...)
You would be better off buying a newer graphics card. SLI doesn't always scale very well.
9800GT sli's are proven to perform better than single GTX260's and 5770s. Assuming he has a power supply that is over 500W.
Sorry it took me so bloody long... Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.2 GHz) 8 GB RAM (As mentioned) Dell (Please don't hate me) 0PP150 motherboard w/ nForce 650i SLI chipset And apparently it's actually a 512 MB graphics card. (I've been running into little surprises like this ever since I got this thing. It's my own little horror story I use to encourage others to build their own.) Given that it is in fact a 512 MB GPU I'm starting to lean toward just buying a new one, but thank you all for your help, I appreciate it. :)
VRAM doesn't matter much unless you're running a very high res
That would explain the slight difficulty I'm having running games at 1080p.
That would explain the slight difficulty I'm having running games at 1080p.
depends what games you're trying to run and what your specs are
Make sure your mobo supports SLI, also, SLI disables dual monitors.
No it doesnt. Only in windows XP it disables dual monitors. They fixed it in vista/7 with the badaboom update
Jesus, I thought the title said "Thinking about dial-up" .
Uhm, similar question. Extremely similar, I have a 9800GTX+, should I get a second one for SLI or save up for a new card? I have two monitors, on vista, and I'd like to be able to run ArmA2 with a comfortable 30 fps...
