I don't post here much at all but I do browse daily. This is the only forum i really go to and I don't know where else to turn.
Basically, my problem is this:
I want to start working on a video project. After installing Windows 7 and all the necessary applications, codecs, and software I need, I'm ready. The video files I have downloaded to use for the project are .mkv files. The program I want to use for this project is Sony Vegas 9. Obviously, Vegas 9 has no idea what an mkv is.
Codecs confuse the hell out of me to begin with. So the simple solution is convert my mkv files into something like avi, while keeping the HD quality the mkv files have. Ive tried 3 converters so far with no luck. Then I tried a program called MKVtoolnix which did something called "muxing". This made the mkv now appear to be avi. Sony Vegas continues to refuse the AVI.
Here's the craziest thing out of this madness. Suddenly, Windows Media Player is playing the mkv videos. That should not be happening at all as far as I know and it wasn't to begin with. I had to use VideoLAN or Media Player Classic. Even Windows Movie Maker is allowing me to edit mkv files. Again, that was not happening before and I have no idea what is going on.
The main question: How can I convert my MKVs into something Sony Vegas will accept and let me edit?
Well since WMM will accept it just export it as HD from there.
You will lose some quality in that process though so if you wanna keep the original quality (and if you have a big HDD) open it in one of your video players and record the video with FRAPS if you should have that.

ah thank you sir. that was very helpful. Not sure how you found that when I looked all over google for answers. I now have a converter and vegas accepts the converted video. Wish it wouldn't take so long though. Thank you again.
