• NINJAM - Realtime Music Collaboration Software

Basically, it's software that lets you jam with people over the internet. You may be asking "bu-bu-bu-but what about latency?". Well, I'll get to that in a moment after I explain what the fuck this is. From the official site (http://www.ninjam.com/):
What is NINJAM? NINJAM is a program to allow people to make real music together via the Internet. Every participant can hear every other participant. Each user can also tweak their personal mix to his or her liking. NINJAM is cross-platform, with clients available for Mac OS X and Windows. NINJAM uses compressed audio which allows it to work with any instrument or combination of instruments. You can sing, play a real piano, play a real saxophone, play a real guitar with whatever effects and guitar amplifier you want, anything. If your computer can record it, then you can jam with it (as opposed to MIDI-only systems that automatically preclude any kind of natural audio collaboration). Since the inherent latency of the Internet prevents true realtime synchronization of the jam, and playing with latency is weird (and often uncomfortable), NINJAM provides a solution by making latency (and the weirdness) much longer. Latency in NINJAM is measured in measures, and that's what makes it interesting. The NINJAM client records and streams synchronized intervals of music between participants. Just as the interval finishes recording, it begins playing on everyone else's client. So when you play through an interval, you're playing along with the previous interval of everybody else, and they're playing along with your previous interval. If this sounds pretty bizarre, it sort of is, until you get used to it, then it becomes pretty natural. In many ways, it can be more forgiving than a normal jam, because mistakes propagate differently. Part tool, part toy, NINJAM is designed with an emphasis on musical experimentation and expression.
Well, that answers your question, I guess. Pretty cool, huh? You can get the client software right here, and if you happen to have REAPER installed, it has built in support for NINJAM with the ReaNINJAM plugin. I haven't really had the chance to use this before, but maybe a few of us could jam sometime. How about it? I might get a friend to set up a dedicated server for us, but for now, we can use one of these servers.
this sounds like a lot fun
this sounds like a lot fun
It is.
Oh wow we should try this some time.
If you guys want this, i recommend checking out Ohm Studio. Someone should make a thread on it, it looks amazing.
If you guys want this, i recommend checking out Ohm Studio. Someone should make a thread on it, it looks amazing.
Meh, that's more for producing a song. This is more for actually jamming. Still looks awesome, though.
Hey guys, I'm currently on this server with two other guys, but it's getting kind of boring! Who wants to jam? test.ninjam.com:2051
One attitude to have when jamming online is that you aren't actually playing with people. You should see it more like you're jamming against a backing track. It makes it a lot easier.
Won't let me join.
Check "Join Anonymously" and it should work. I did a Stairway to Heaven cover with a crazy-ass guitarist and it was really fun :v:
Sorry, I had to disconnect- the drummer kept doing rhythms out of time from the metronome D:

It seems to be working now, but there doesn't appear to be any other remote channels. Does that mean I'm on my own in the server?
It seems to be working now, but there doesn't appear to be any other remote channels. Does that mean I'm on my own in the server?
Yeah. I'll join right now. [editline]26th March 2011[/editline] There is some awesome shit going down in test.ninjam.com:2049.
Oh my god. That was absolutely amazing! Can't believe the group used my idea too. I feel humbled.
