For running games up such as Metro 2033, Fallout, Black Ops etc?
Zotac GeForce GT430 1GB PCI-Express Graphics Card

3.2 GHz AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor Socket AM3
http://misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=467932&CatId=0
Now I'm not 100% sure if my motherboard will accept that CPU and frankly I have no clue what mobo I have.
However I am currently running an AMD 9550 2.2 GHz Quad Core which I'm sure is AM2
If need be, suggest a motherboard?
Which can be found here on the same site- http://misco.co.uk/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=230&
This website's main dispatch/factory is literally a 10 minute drive from here and I can get this stuff tomorrow if I want so I'd appreciate the help.
Budget wise, honestly I don't want to spend over £200-300 on the cpu and gfx, this is coming out of a student loan that I don't want to blow in a week.
http://www.piriform.com/speccy post a screenshot of this, we also need PSU info which will be on a sticker on the side of the PSU itself at the top or bottom of your case
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
oh and case info would be helpful to make sure you don't need low profile or something

250 Watt PSU
It's a pretty generic Acer case, M5100 model or something, from their Aspire range.
(edit: it's a prebuilt)
I recommend at least an HD5770 or a GTS 450 to even begin to fathom the prospect of attempting to touch the game that is Metro 2033.
Oh yeah, and I believe that the AM3 socket is backwards compatible, but you can only run DDR2 RAM.
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
Oh wait a second. A 250w PSU?
Well, I don't actually play Metro 2033 but I know that game can be pretty intensive so I figured that'd show as far as I'm going with my games.
Really, though, I'll be running New Vegas, Bad Company 2, MAYBE Black ops.
You're gonna need a new PSU.

http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=432338&CatId=2697 (The 5770 GPU)
Including VAT with the processor, it's a little over 300.
I'll see if I can reduce it a little.
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
Ok get this 5770 instead. It's 20 euros cheaper: http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=500558&CatId=2697
So these are my buys:
CPU http://misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=467932&CatId=0
GPU http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=500558&CatId=2697
PSU http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=508511&CatId=1888
I won't need a new mobo or anything like that?
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
My dad has a un-opened 1GB Asus GTS250 (DDR3) he won't be using, if I'm trying to budget will it be better to opt for that over the HD5770?

It's highly unlikely that CPU is going to work on your mobo - I can find very little documentation on the Acer RS780HVF, but only certain AM2+ motherboards support AM3 CPU's, and it's unlikely your one does.
Okay, so here's what I'm thinking..
cpu- http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=467932&sku=162773
gpu- I've been given a free Asus GTS250 1GB (GDDR3) card, should I take it? Or opt to buy a different card?
psu- http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=508511&sku=OB153890
mobo- http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=494523&sku=162874
memory- http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=485646&sku=Q280118
Everything seems compatible. The only issue is the mobo takes 1330Mhz RAM where as the Kingston I opted for is 1600 but it's cheap and within my price range for all parts right now.
Is this decent?
My intentions: Recording full-screen games with Fraps while being able to play on med or high. Playing games like Fallout New Vegas, STALKER and perhaps Black Ops and Bad Company 2.
I would've recommended a good AM2+ processor, but that site doesn't seem to have any...
And if you get a free GTS 250, can you buy other stuff?
The ATI Radeon 5770 performs 20-25% better, but from what I see, the GTS 250 scores around 6600 in 3dmark Vantage, and my old laptop equipped with a GTX 260M which scored 5879 managed to keep a pretty high FPS in fallout 3 with 2x antialiasing and 16x anisotropic filtering @ 1600x900. I haven't really tried stalker much on that one, but it does perform quite well, provided you turn down the settings a little.
On Bad Company 2, I got around 30-35 fps average @ 1600x900 on all high with no AA, 16x AF.
So your GTS 250 should perform slightly above that.
What exactly is the frequency on your current RAM?
Do you absolutely need that CPU? It's good, but you can get something cheaper that performs similarly. If you get a slightly cheaper CPU, you can afford to get a much better GPU.
Well..
If you want to have a look around the site with a ~£400 budget in mind.. you can come up with something that would be best.
If you think I should keep the GTS 250 then work with the 400 for the rest, otherwise if you think I should just opt for another GPU then it'll need to fit within that £400 too :\
My GTS 250 runs all the games you want pretty well at 1366x768. At your resolution they all should run decently, except STALKER if you are talking about Clear Sky.
[editline]7th January 2011[/editline]
BC2 will stutter on max, go for high on that one. Also is the GTS 250 1GB?
It is 1GB yep
Well..

Well, if you have a <300 budget, the config you came up with is the only really possible one, seeing as there are no AM2 processors on the site, meaning you have to go with AM3, forcing you to get another motherboard, and getting compatible ram...
And free stuff is good.
[editline]7th January 2011[/editline]
What frequency is your RAM? I don't see much point in getting less than before.
[editline]7th January 2011[/editline]
If you can use another store, I see much more potential for upgrade.
I had 6gb ram but it was only 333mhz x_x
wouldn't 4gb 1333mhz be a huge step up even though it's 'less'?
It's actually 666, speccy only shows half the speed
It's actually 666, speccy only shows half the speed
It's not speccy, it's DDR.

Yes, but not that huge.
Anyways, I think that if you could use something like overclockers.co.uk or some other site, we could get you better stuff...
Yes The AMD 955 is a great CPU for the money if you are running a AM2+ board though you might need a BIOS update
