After some advice please FacePunch
Around 2 years, my friend and I created two comedy sketch videos which we uploaded onto Youtube called Delerious Dream World
They were basically just a couple of minutes of random sketches of us that had absolutly no relevance to each other and some outtakes put at the end. Total length 6-7 minutes
It didnt have much in the way of production value, it was shot with a cheap digital camera and no additional equipment. Was done more as a prat around to see how funny the ideas were we could come up with
Now we are gearing up for a return with a new series called 'Fame Chasers', we wanted this one to have a some sort of story running through it with gags fitted in to it. Similar to Not Going Out, Mrs Browns Boys and Men Behaving Badly, that sort of set up
Basic story:
My mates character has a breakup with his girlfriend after she gets him fired from his job, only to discover afterwards that she had come into a large sum of money that would of allowed him to retire and that was why she got him fired
So he moves in with me and decides that rather than getting a proper job he is going to try and become a youtube sensation in order to move into a career in TV (dont say its over the top, its exactly what he is doing in real life)
Now as the episodes progress he starts off by making little one off sketchs and slowly starts getting friends in to help out, slowly my character gets more and more into the idea by helping out until we are both of the mind set we can become famous if we can just get the break
We have got all the equipment sorted, locations available to shoot etc and I am currently writing up the scripts for the episodes. It is at this point that my friend and I reach a disagreement and where your advice comes in
I am of the mindset that each episode should be atleast 10, preferably 15 minutes long in order to get enough story and gags in to make the show worth watching
My mates thoughts are that the episodes should be shorter, 7-8 minutes long in order to get people to watch it - He seems to think that people hunting around youtube tend not to view unrecognised videos if they are longer than this length whereas I believe that if you can get their attention early and keep it enjoyable they will watch any length of show
I could just do with an idea so I can gear the script around an ideal time
The average teen (aka your main audience) has an incredibly short attention span.
Instead of making episodes, it would probably be best to make a load of shorts that are about 2-3 minutes long, max.

Well our last videos were strings of minute or less sketches. We wanted to do something with an actual story flowing through. With the amount of material we have at the moment we had mapped out a plot for the series that would need around 5-6 episodes to cover.
With short videos you couldn't really keep a plot going could you? there wouldn't be enough of a time frame to fit any devolpment into it would there?
Surely as long as you captured their attention within the first minute or 2 they would stick with the video. Otherwise teenagers wouldn't watch anything thats on TV

It depends on the age of the teenager. If you try and cater to a stereotype, often you end up insulting the people you are trying to appeal to.
I'd like to think 10-15 minutes is short enough to be quick and easily watchable, but long enough to have plot development.
Adventure Time runs at 11 minutes per episode for reference, and they get plenty of great stuff done in that time, but it never drags at all.
I like a mix of short and long sketches. Perhaps some episodes could be full length while others have two stories in each half?

Most of the shows on Cartoon Network make that mistake. Or they are just shitty all together.
You're uploading to Youtube. Not getting primetime on TV. 4-7 minutes is fine. The funniest youtube videos are around and under that length.
people tend to have a very short attention span on youtube
