Long story short, my room is getting re-made soon, and I suggested that I should take this PC to my room, but my parents don't want to because I guess it's too much of a hassle to take all of the cables and shit (I don't know.)
So, my dad said: "You can't take this PC to your room, but I think it's time you got your own laptop (it's not like it's a car or something, but I'm not complaining) HOWEVER, since I know you probably want one of those expensive laptops or a Mac or something, so this will count as your birthday and Christmas present".
After much thinking, I thought "why not."
Now, I've wanted a Mac for quite some time now, so I could get the best of both worlds (desktop with windows and laptop with mac), plus macs have boot camp which lets them run windows anyways (I'm pretty sure that's how it works, correct me if I'm wrong.)
BUT, I also wanted a nice laptop like this
http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/touchsmart/#/TouchSmart-Tx2/Overview
for a while now. Maybe even a laptop that could play some games, or maybe even a full fledged gaming laptop (actually I just want it to run Modern Warfare 2 :v:).
So my question is, should I get a Mac book or a laptop?
I don't think price matters much, since this counts as both presents. The more expensive the better I guess (Yeah I just read that and I sound like a spoiled brat.)

Only you should have the answer to that, to be honest. They're both good operating systems and it simply comes down to personal perspective on what you want to use.
also, inb4 massive fanboy flamewar.

Yeah I know, but the income from the random internet people always helps

The income of this debate on OS's is never anything more than "lolz get windows cuz it got gayms chad warden here", or "lol get a mac cuz it's prety".
I would recommend Windows, but that's only my personal preference. Macs are good computers as well if you're willing to spend a little bit more, or maybe you're just interesting in trying something new.
Posted at 11:11 PM, I wish Hallie W. would love me
Macbook Pro. Longer battery life, they look far nicer than that HP, they can run Windows and OS X with ease, and the keyboard on the MBP is one of the best keyboards I ever used.
[editline]11:09PM[/editline]
Also MBP have a 9400 GT M (I think, might just be a 9400M) so you can get away with some games on it (in windows)
I know people who have the latest macbook pros and love them. If i were you, I would get a macbook pro.
I would not go with the touch screen... you will realize that you payed a lot more for something for a feature that you rarely use. I have a Macbook (yea hate all you want) and it works great for me, especially because I make montages for events such as bar/bat mitzvahs on it and I love photography, iMovie, Photoshop and Aperture are perfect for me.
It depends on personal preference... My mom wanted a new computer that was specifically not a Mac, so I helped her pick out a high power HP laptop (If going PC hp is my favorite)

To add to this, If you are willing to spend a bit more you can get a 15inch with the 9600m (I think). Which should hold up in most games you throw at it. If you are wanting to game, bootcamp is the way to go. Do not use crossover games etc if you want a good gaming experience on the macbook pro.
Oh and they will run MW2.
Edit: I would advise you not to go with the touchscreen. Seriously.

Sorry for the "noob" question, but will bootcamp allow me to do anything windows does? Just like having windows installed in mac hardware?
Also, will windows 7 run aero and all of that nice stuff in boot camp?

FUCK YEAH
I have a macbook pro from back when they weren't unibody, and it has an 8600 m.
Oddly enough, it has ALWAYS outperformed my desktop, which has a 9800GTX+ (last time I benchmarked I had an 8600 gt)
I used to use bootcamp, and things like GMOD and HL2 got a very high framrate (150 I believe).
World of Warcraft on the mac side gets 60-70 fps with most details up.
The battery has amazed me, and apple's customer service has been the best computer service I've used.
Pros: Long Battery, Nice Screen, Decent Specs, Durable.
Cons: Gets extremely hot when gaming (I've been burnt), heavy.
Now, there are still some really nice PC laptops out there, but, i don't own one, I can't give you valid feedback on those. Nor can I the new series of unibody MBP.
Good luck finding a good laptop.
Wait, now that I've done research, a Mac CAN run games (granted you use boot camp). So all that side of the hate was just to the OS? Not the hardware?

It will, it's just like another OS on a computer in boot camp.

Awesome.
And is a unibody (the newer models I think) heavy?
If not, I'll go with a Mac

With bootcamp you actually run windows natively. It's basically like a laptop with windows. So you will have to buy a copy of windows as well. All you do is partion the hdd (easy stuff), install windows on the right partion (easy stuff) and throw in the snow leopard disk which includes all the drivers etc. Then when you turn the computer on, you hold a key down (forgot which one) and it will give you the option to boot into windows. It's really easy to do.
Check out the apple site for more info, they can help you a lot.
If i were you. I would go for the top of the range 15 Macbook pro. The 9600m will improve your gaming performance etc. What size are you thinking of? 13, 15 or 17
Oh and no, they are in fact EXTREMELY light. Lighter than any other 15inch laptop i've used (was in the apple store today).

Unibody makes it lighter and stronger than normal plastic actually. And it seems to dissapate heat better, so it runs cooler.

It's a good size to get. It's portable yet still has a decent screen size. You can always look at options on the apple site.

I'm comparing them here http://www.apple.com/mac/whichmacbook/compare.html, yep, the 15 inch seems perfect
Since you say that you want to play games I'd say go with a higher end gaming laptop (Falcoln NW, whatever dell xps they are on now, Toshiba Qosimo...) and if you want to use the Apple aspect of things then make the machine dual boot as a hackintosh. If you do get an Apple and you want to play games then I'd recommend dual booting with whatever flavor of Windows you want.
The only reason I say go for the super expensive gaming pc is because if your family is willing and able to pay for it then why not. I know that I wouldn't ask my family to get me either... I am currently using my hp that I got at a pawn shop for $400.
Some of my friends own a Mac and I know that all they do with it is surf the internet and view pfd's for science and type word documents for school. They don't need the hardware that they have and they never do any final cut express or photoshop or any of the design things that most Macs are made to do.
Whatever computer you get you won't get good battery life while gaming as the components are using significantly more energy.
Okay don't rag on me you mac people. But if you are going to get a pc get an asus they are bery mac like in there construction, keyboards, touchpads, and quality.
I think that I'll get the 2.66ghz 15 inch

Argh, is the 13 inch good enough for games as well? 1700 does seem too expensive

Or hell, is the Mac book air enough?

The mac book air does not have a DVD drive, and its way more expensive
You're going to get a better performing laptop if you get a pc.

Just get the high end 13 inch, air is a waste.
If you must have OSX, go hackintosh.
O.o I can't believe the flame war hasn't started yet!
Back on topic:
What system you choose mostly depends on what you wanna do - if you'll mostly play or program in any language, pc it is.
But if you want to render shit, make music and movies, and watch multimedias, aaand sometimes you might play (since it has boot camp), get a mac.
I'm glad that there was no flaming in this thread, but it would inevitably come so that's why i'm closing the thread. Also the OP does break a few rules, designed to stop flamewars happening.
