Pope claimed that they had to wait nearly an hour for their order and that she had to get napkins and silverware for the table herself. “At this point I became very annoyed because I had already gone up to the bar myself to have my soda refilled because the waitress never came back,” Pope said. After the $73 bill came, the group paid for food, drinks, and tax but refused to pay the tip. After explaining the bad service to the bartender in charge, Pope claimed he took their money and called police. The couple was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car. “I understand that, you know, we didn’t pay the gratuity, but it was a gratuity, it wasn’t something that was required,” said Wagner. The owner admitted that the group waited unusually long for their food, but said the pub was extremely busy that night. He said managers offered to comp the food, a claim the couple denies ever happened. “Obviously we would have liked for the patron and the establishment to have worked this out without getting the police involved,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Stuart Bedics. Police charged them with theft since the gratuity was part of the actual bill. However, it is doubtful that the charges will hold up in front of a judge. The couple is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Don't like our service? Go to jail.
Wait, tips are mandatory? I've never seen a tip on an actual bill...
I fucking hate places that require you to tip. It's like.. Fuck off, if I like your work then I'll tip you but if you don't deserve it then why the fuck should I?
Wait, tips are mandatory? I've never seen a tip on an actual bill...
Sometimes I think they put 10% on the actual price for tips.
Well I once waited 2 straight hours in an restaurant for my damn chicken to arrive from another city, I mean seriously.
also, reservoir dogs scene comes to mind.
here in england we never give tips
I never give tips. They are there for my service, it's their JOB to serve me. Why would they receive more money for doing their regularly job?
You tip waiters whose services are out of the ordinary. Waiters who are extravagantly friendly and dedicated to making your meal that much better, who, even if you are made to wait for longer than usual, keep you updated and check on you every so often to make sure you're enjoying yourself despite the wait. Waiters who are overachievers. The waiters described in this article did not fit this description. They did not deserve tips.
here in england we never give tips
Maybe up north where you're all scabby bastards. But down south, if the service was worthy of a tip, or if your waitress was hot, then is has to be done.
Maybe up north where you're all scabby bastards. But down south, if the service was worthy of a tip, or if your waitress was hot, then is has to be done.
[sp]you're not gonna get laid because you tip her[/sp]
I never give tips. They are there for my service, it's their JOB to serve me. Why would they receive more money for doing their regularly job?
Because some of them work harder and give better service with no extra pay other than a tip. Plus you're only like 13 I bet so you probably don't even have enough of your parents money to tip them anyway.

They don't count *only* on tips to survive, that's why they have a salary... And if they don't make enough money they can quit any time or get another job and work double...

tipping is a stupid practise. i never tip. why the fuck do you deserve a tip for doing your job? do i get a tip for doing my job? no.
tipping is a stupid practise. i never tip. why the fuck do you deserve a tip for doing your job? do i get a tip for doing my job? no.
Because they get less than minimum wage and if wasn't for tips they wouldn't be able to live a normal life.
tipping is a stupid practise. i never tip. why the fuck do you deserve a tip for doing your job? do i get a tip for doing my job? no.
You're a douchebag, then. Tips are usually how most waiters make their money, as they can legally be paid less than minimum wage if it's expected they can make up the difference in tips (which they don't always).
Because they get less than minimum wage and if wasn't for tips they wouldn't be able to live a normal life.
if they are getting less than minimum wage isn't that technically illegal?

I dont get paid extra for doing harder work or doing a better job, they shouldnt either. Since its THEIR JOB And america has shitty employment if u get less than minimum. In canada you get your wages plus tips

You do realize that waiters and waitresses make less than 3 dollars an hour from the actual restaurant. The rest of their pay comes from tips. It's also not their fault the food is taking longer than it should. It's the chefs. The waiters have no say on how long the food will take to make. If they ask the chef, the chef will get mad and say "It will be out when it's ready, we are very backed up." How do I know? I work in a restaurant.
if they are getting less than minimum wage isn't that technically illegal?
The food industry lobbied for that loophole in the minimum wage laws. Also, this is a mandatory gratuity attached to large groups or large bills, not a standard tip. So, technically they're skipping out on the bill, hence police.
so clearly none of you people have ever worked in a restaurant waiters are paid below minimum wage as long as they make over 30 a month in tips employers are only required to pay 2-4 dollars depending on the state. In most states tipping 10% is mandatory. Waiters are paid BELOW MINIMUM WAGE. Tip, you fucking pricks. If they give bad service, fine, give them a 10% tip. If they give normal, 15%. If they're exceptional, 20%. It's not their job to make your time pleasant, it's their job to bring food to you. That's it. this isn't coming from a waiter, my dad just owned a bar+grill. I've seen how the waitresses and waiters live - it's shit. Their jobs are way more difficult than you believe. edit: of course, made this reply when there were only like 4 in the thread
