Hundreds of soldiers have been deployed in Sierra Leone and Liberia in an attempt to quarantine the remote villages at the centre of the Ebola outbreak, as three new cases were discovered in Nigeria and authorities in Saudi Arabia said a man was being tested for suspected infection.
The Saudi health ministry said a man in his 40s who had recently returned from Sierra Leone had shown symptoms of viral haemorrhagic fever and was being treated was at a specialist hospital in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. The patient is in isolation and blood samples are being tested.
As the epidemic entered its seventh month, 700 troops in Sierra Leone began setting up roadblocks to ensure that only health personnel could move in and out of the hardest-hit communities. They include two eastern districts where health workers have sometimes been attacked by residents who fear that treatment centres are causing Ebola to spread.
"Contain it"
Are they just going to shoot anyone who looks sick?

Looks like they are just trying to isolate the area to keep it from spreading if possible. Can't really blame them, the outbreak spreading more would be very bad.

Potentially. There was an article about this a few days ago, and it said that the soldiers mission would be to prevent anyone from leaving the country (except if you're a foreign citizen, but said foreign citizen would still be tested for the virus in any case) by any means necessary.

Why contain it?

hello what are roadblocks to stop the movement of potentially infected villages.
There's not enough vaccine to go around
this is reminding me of metro 2034

so it doesn't spread further and infect more people, compromising the safety of everyone on earth?
just a thought
I thought everyone was saying that it's really hard to spread Ebola, and that it requires contact with feces/vomit to be transmitted? It sure seems to be spreading hard and fast just fine, despite claims against that.
Is this some kind of new strain? Are water supplies and bodies getting contaminated? Are people just fucking wallowing in infected shit and puke like pigs in mud? I don't comprehend how it's spreading so fast, unless either people are fucking up big time or something is different to the usual M.O. of the virus.

These aren't first world countries, it spreads easily there because of so many differences in those countries than first world countries.

I'm pretty sure it transfers through spittle and stuff as well. I'm sure most of these places don't have indoor plumbing and most people just piss/shit all over the place, like in that one vice documentary when they went to Liberia. They have like no sanitation there what-so-ever.
is cool
i heard a secondary unit is currently undergoing preparations and should be operational within six months
if necessary, the infected will be terminated

"let's shoot this guy he looks like he has ebola"
*shoots man and blood comes out*
"See? I knew he had ebola."
but soon there will be order again.

Man, I don't see a single piece of MOPP equipment on those guys. How are they supposed to protect themselves from the disease? What happens when someone does get shot attempting to breach the quarantine, and soldiers are exposed to ebola-infected bodily fluids?

The more people are infected the more frequent mutations become.
Part of the reason why it's important to get rid of this stuff early is so it doesn't become worse.

Do you think they would even have any advanced equipment like that?

Reminds me more of Dawn of the Dead(1978)
Handing over body's of the dead to the government.
Family's refusing to hand them over.

Ebola isn't airborne and they're probably going to simply shoot you if you get to close to them and they're not in quarantine gear. When they have military grade weaponry I doubt its hard for them to convince someone to stay the hell back.

Who'd have thought that ebola would spread really well in the very environment we all said it would. Ebola is hard to spread in a place with sanitary standards that aren't throwbacks to the dark ages when chamberpots were emptied into the streets and the cleanest a village would become happened to be the day it rained.

Ebola isn't airborn so they don' need gasmasks. They just have to take precautions to not touch bodily fluids of people who show symptoms, which is no more complex than wearing gloves for the most part. Plus these aren't the richest countries, they probably can't afford MOPP gear even if they wanted to.

Yep, that describes it perfectly.

Let it spill over into the schools and churches, let the bodies pile up in the streets. In the end, they'll beg us to save them.

Odds are that if there is an infected person trying to get through, he'll be too ill to get far or put up a fight to get close enough to someone with a gun keeping guard. People start having symptoms almost as soon as they catch the disease and a lot of those symptoms weaken the body considerably. You won't find massive amounts of Ebola carrying people trying to overrun a barricade and infecting guards.
