I have downloaded drivers which should work 100% with my scanner (mustek 1200cp ) , but the one problem is that windows xp does not recognize my scanner when i plug it into the parallel port (printer port 1)
I tried going to the scanner/printer setup thing , but it did not work. Can someone please help me get this damn thing working
I would say, try it in USB.

I've never actually heard of these things working before, the device basically needs to have been built to support them (at least with non printer devices).
@OP - Which driver did you download? I see there is a 1.0 and 1.2 version, have you tried both?

Wow, that's some old technology. It's possible that the scanner is just too old to use WinXP, even though there are drivers for it.
