Our very own Hexxeh has just released the brand new ChromiumOS Lime, which includes many updates and adds boatloads of new features and extensive hardware support. Check out the site (which i designed and built) here - http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/lime.php [release]Remember Lime? Now it’s back, and it’s better than ever. In fact, it’s every bit as good as Vanilla, but it also includes that extra hardware support you know and love from Flow, but with the bleeding edge freshness you got from Vanilla. It’s 338 days late, sure, but with good reason. The version that was in progress back then was a hand-built image, that wouldn’t be updated daily. The current system will get freshly baked each day into an image that has the supreme hardware support, but also includes any new features and tweaks that appeared that day in Vanilla too. Vastly improved hardware support! Lime enjoys vastly improved hardware support compared to that of Vanilla. Here’s a list of the improvements in hardware support: • Broadcom WiFi – BCM43XX • Ralink WiFi – RT24XX, RT28XX, RT30XX • Realtek WiFi – R8187SE, R8712U, RTL73, RTL8180, RTL8187, RTL8192XX • nVidia GPUs – 6 series and newer • ATi/AMD GPUs - HD2900 and newer PAE requirement removed If you were one of the unlucky folks to have a device that didn’t support a PAE kernel, you’re in luck, this is no longer a requirement with Lime! Extra plugins as standard! Need your fix of Java? Java is now fully supported with Lime! More plugins coming very soon! You decide what gets added! These are just a few of the changes featured in Lime, but there’s more! If there’s a piece of hardware that we don’t support where a Linux driver exists but isn’t being shipped, let me know and I’ll likely add it! Tweet me information regarding this.[/release]
Ooh, that's good news. I honestly didn't think we'd see a return of the series, but this looks fantastic. I can't wait to try that on my laptop tomorrow.
downloading right now. gonna check if with works in a VM
Use Vanilla if you want to use it in a VM, Lime is for extra hardware support.
You're on engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/hexxeh-adds-a-splash-of-lime-to-chromium-os-brings-extra-hardwa/
Can we dual boot with this?
Can we dual boot with this?
It's possible, but I don't support it. I used to, but then I got sick of the flood of messages from people who nuked their old OS and files and blamed me.
I'm thinking about trying this out on a spare Hard Drive. It looks quite interesting actually, well done.
i have an old ass dell so i cant fuck with this
Gosh darn I wish I had a USB To fit this. All I have are 5 gig discs.
I wish USB sticks actually lived up to their advertised storage capacity. 2GB should not equal 1.85GB! Ah well, I'll just play with this in a VM.

A lot of people still think that 1GB is 1000MB, when it's actually 1024

I'm sure USB stick manufacturers have got some small-print saying 'Up to' or something along the lines. Sucks for people that have even a tiny bit of knowledge about computers.

I mean since they're all using it as a tool for work or entertainment everyday it pretty much should be mandatory to know the basics behind it.
How about educating the masses about how computers work instead? I mean since they're all using it as a tool for work or entertainment everyday it pretty much should be mandatory to know the basics behind it.
Most of the 'masses' are not bothered, and couldn't quite frankly give a shit about how to use a computer. As long as they think they know that the 'Blue E' icon IS Facebook, and know how to use the basics of Facebook, they're completely happy, and couldn't care less about anything else.
I can't seem to get past the 'tips for connecting to this network' screen while on Lime, but it works just fine if I go through the guest option listed there. It looks really nice once I'm in though.
I was going to try this on my Laptop since the HDD on it died the other night and I sent the replacement to my home address, so I can't get at it until this weekend. Of course I was foiled by the fact that it does actually need some storage on the device to boot properly. I wish I could just point it back at the memory stick. Also that img tool corrupted my memory stick so that it now only formats to 1GB instead of 8GB. Gave fair warning and those things are like a dime a dozen nowadays so can't complain really.

Follow this, but use sda instead of sdc: http://kfalck.net/2010/08/22/if-your-chromium-os-image-doesnt-boot As for being corrupted, it's not, you just need to repartition it back to a single partition layout.
Awesome, my Dell Vostro 1310 is currently working without a hitch on Lime. Except I can't change the timezone for some reason. Now posting from my 'chromiumbook'. Everything is awesome, even my media buttons work. Only other thing that has cropped up apart from not being able to change the timezone is that scrolling is really sluggish and I can't find a way to adjust it. I can turn caps lock on with the caps lock key but if I try to turn it off, either with both shifts or the caps lock key again everything crashes and I need to restore the session. Don't know why I'm listing all this off here you probably know about all this anyway.
Still hoping that my quirky amd graphics card will work eventually. Other than that it looks great.
After a couple of reboots I was finally able to adjust the time zone. Been using it on and off all afternoon and has been great. Good work Hexxeh.
Any advice on how to work on the Chromium OS (besides the instructions in the OS developers guide)?
I wrote the image to my USB key but when I put it in my laptop to boot off it won't work. It gets to the dell splash screen when it first turns on, then the screen goes "true" black (i.e no light at all), then it goes to a "lit up" black screen (so the screen's actually on, just not showing anything) and then it reboots itself. Boot loop basically. Should I try re-writing the image? Or is there an easy fix for something like this?
I still wish this worked better on my laptop. It seems whatever ATI driver is included with this (or maybe the kernel, I don't know) really hates the Mobility Radeon HD 3200 series. Every 5 secs I need to trigger a refresh manually by switching to a VT and back. That's not very convenient.
Downloading as I type this. Looks awesome and will work great when I need a lightweight OS at work or school. Can't wait to give it a try!

is it really not possible to boot chromiumos from a cd?
Things are pretty broken at the moment, I'm working on it.
Wow. I just found out that ChromiumOS (as is shown on all the major gadget blogs) came from Facepunch. That's amazing. I would like to know how you've done it, though. Is it built on top of an existing Linux kernel, or are you building it from some leaked code or something? Essentially, is this your own thing, or are you improving official ChromeOS code?
