• Sony patent reveals Google Glass competitor, for two eyes instead of just one.
Watch out, Google. A recently published patent application reveals that Sony’s head mounted display glasses are progressing down the evolutionary path rather nicely. What once amounted to just wide-eyed concepts, this latest patent filing, a continuation patent filed on November 14, 2012, shows that Sony, with perhaps a bit of inspiration for Google Glass, is nearing a practical model. And unlike Google’s take on HMDs, Sony’s has information displays for both eyes. This isn’t the first patent to reveal Sony’s HMD aspirations. A patent published in the summer of 2012 shows a futuristic device — it looks like something from a made-for-TV sci-fi movie. The device in that patent has two lens, not connected by a traditional bridge, with each lens acting also serving as a display. There are cameras and battery packs and the works. This is, after all, just a concept. ... Sony’s most recent patent is a more practical take on HMD glasses. They’re built on a traditional glasses frame in a sort of Google Glass fashion. The actual pop-up display sits behind the glasses’ lenses and, as previously mentioned, there are two displays along with ear buds mounted on little arms. ... This is a brand new market. There is enough room for Sony, Google and likely several companies quietly building their own head mounted displays. Each company has unique strengths. Google has the advantage of its all-knowing, always-connected services. Sony has been building world-class hardware for 50 years — and has a dynamic new CEO in Kazuo Hirai. Now about that bar in Seattle. They only banned Google’s model, right? Ooh, this will be interesting..
Competition, good.
Ooh, like a helmet-mounted HUD?
looks like it'll be a lot more intrusive and harder to integrate with prescription glasses, if the lenses themselves are the displays (and not the boxes at the sides, which at this stage look like they'd be a little view obstructing)
It seems like with this new market opening up, nobody wants to be left behind. I can't wait to see what happens in the next few years with this - the potential is awesome. Definitely agree with jake, competition is always a good thing.
I think the main problem with adopting google glass (and probably becomes an even bigger problem with two lenses) is that noone wants to be that guy who walks down the street with one before they've become well known and everyone is wearing them Noone wants to be the one guy on the street wearing the weird future glasses, you just look like a douche doing that, like if you have one of those earpieces

Although I would wear it around town where I live now because spooky gangsters

This will be for the dedicated JC Denton cosplayer.

Think of the masses: why would they buy this? How can this benefit them, when they already have a smartphone? Do its features really make it worth it?

I've only see them do things my phone does without looking awkward to wear...
Can't wait until we have contact lenses that work with this technology.

I wonder if Yahoo will also make one of these.

The stuff crammed onto those puts Joe 90's pair to shame. ...and it probably costs about four times as much as the Glass.
Google's approach is a sleek device that essentially places a single small screen in the corner of your vision and some convenient tools which hide when not in use. Sony's approach is a head-mounted entertainment center, capable of individually taking over all sensory organs except your nose. At least we'll have both extremes covered.
You all thought thought of this too I bet.
I knew that was a WebTV terminal simply because the model started with "INT-"
Remember people said this about the Iphone when it first came out though? Many people thought it wouldnt catch on because it was "too futuristic" and unpractical
Wouldn't two displays be really distracting? I mean you'd probably need one good eye to focus on your surroundings.
ew really
They look better in Deus Ex. I'd grab a pair if they were real, and had all those abilities.
Ooh, like a helmet-mounted HUD?
I know it's stupid... ...But I want it.
Wouldn't two displays be really distracting? I mean you'd probably need one good eye to focus on your surroundings.
Would probably be used to create a 3D effect, feeding images with slightly differing depth information to each eye. But yeah, that would be too much. I don't want a 3D interface to navitage/focus my eyes on within my 3D real world. A 2D overlay is more than enough.
