HOLLYWOOD filmmaker James Cameron fulfilled a teenage dream on Thursday when he was named National Geographic explorer-in-residence, a title that means as much to him as the Oscars he has won for blockbuster movies like Avatar and Titanic.
'Being named an explorer is a great honour and as amazing an outcome as being an Academy Award-winning director,' Cameron told AFP after he and Spanish marine ecologist Enric Sala were inducted into the small circle of National Geographic explorers, which with the newcomers numbers just 15.
As a teen, Cameron said, 'I could think of nothing better than to be an ocean explorer.' 'In fact, at the age of 16, living landlocked in a small town in Canada, 500 miles (800km) from the ocean, I got certified to scuba dive,' he said.
'I didn't even see an ocean for two more years. I was scuba-diving in a river but it didn't matter - I had set my foot down that path and the end of the path, or certainly a milestone on the path, is today.' Cameron said he was more comfortable in the role of National Geographic explorer than as an award-winning filmmaker in Hollywood, where he admitted to sometimes feeling like a fish out of water.
'I don't think of myself as a Hollywood person,' Cameron told AFP, adding that he made Titanic, which won 11 Oscars, because it gave him the opportunity to 'dive the wreck' of the oceanliner.
As a National Geographic explorer, Cameron will try to pilot a one-man submarine down as deep as 11,000m below sea level, exploring 'part of the ocean that's never been explored by humans and has only been very, very briefly glimpsed by robotic eyes,' he said.
Says the guy who made a few box office topping, multi-million dollar movies.
How does being called an explorer by Nat Geo mean anything?

Imagine Hugh Hefner saying he's not that much of a casanova right before gushing about the hot bitches running around his mansion.
Neat I just watched Sanctum by James Cameron.

It means he feels like he's not the correct personality.
Like for example, Tom Scholz of Boston has been called "un-rock n' roll", because if you met him and didn't know he was in Boston you might not guess he was a rock star.

Means he'll be featured in their shows
Not surprised really.

I thought Avatar was terrible, but I'm glad he got this position.
Considering he dived to the Titanic 3 times for 2 different movies I'd say I'm surprised he didn't get this sooner.

Not to be anal, but didn't he lose the The Hurt Locker?
It won three categories.

There's more than just the best picture category you know
There's more than just the best picture category you know
Best Picture was the big one really, everyone knew he'd win the staple sci-fi awards.
I goddamn liked Avatar
It was a great movie in my opinion. Having the blu-ray version to watch for the first time, I felt the chills run down my spine as the giant hammerhead dinosaurs attacked the human troops.
I hope he finds cool stuff down there, then he can use this as inspiration for future films.
Good, no one mentioned anything about Avatar - Keep growing Facepunch!
Is this the guy who made LOTR?
-snip i'm horrible at reading-
Is this the guy who made LOTR?
The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar
To name a few
Peter Jackson's the LotR guy
James Cameron is a fucking fantastic director.

"Avatar is too mainstream, I think it's a terrible movie."
Kidding aside, it's nice that he got something that meant a lot to him.

Mainstream was not the problem, it actually bad was. The story was very poor and seen many times. And obviously ripped from Pocahontas/Dance with the wolves. All it had was eye candy, which is ok for the masses, but some people actually enjoy a good storyline. Good visuals age old and fade away, good stories remain for decades. Actually avatar had so much cg at some points it even became disgusting. I don't see why they didn't make it 100% cgi movie.
I like how people think Oscars mean anything about a film.

Dances with Wolves is from '90 and Pocahontas is from '95.
Now tell me why people aren't complaining about Pocahontas stealing from Dances with Wolves. :colbert:

I know, which is why I said after that "Kidding aside"

I think people don't mind as much with Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves because they're very similar movies in terms of setting. They both deal with settler/native conflict and interaction in America. Obviously the regions are different but still.
Meanwhile Avatar's setting is far, far different, and had the potential to have a more original plot than it did.

WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT A STORY BEING REUSED? If it can be retold BETTER then that's all that matters! I feel that Avatar was incredibly good with what it did, it was a movie that was able to make people feel emotionally connected to CGI

Why isn't it a legitimate storyline? It is a realistic concept in planet taking over
