[release]SAN DIEGO (AP) — A 12-year-old killer whale has died at Seaworld in San Diego. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the orca, named Sumar, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Park spokesman David Koontz says veterinarians took blood samples from the orca and put him on antibiotics Monday after he began acting lethargic. Park officials canceled the early afternoon show Tuesday so they could care for the whale. The 5 p.m. show also was canceled but regular programming is expected to resume on Wednesday. Whales can live into their 40s and Koontz says the death of such a young whale is a mystery. A necropsy is planned to determine the cause of death. Sumar's death leaves the San Diego facility with six killer whales. Now would be the time to go. With the Cove, studies on cetacean sentience, and increasing support to ban cetaceans from aquariums, shamu will be a thing of the past in 20-40 years.
