Parcel delivery company City Link, which employs 2,727 people, has gone into administration.
The Coventry-based company, owned by investment firm Better Capital, called in administrators on Christmas Eve after "substantial losses".
RMT union general secretary Mick Cash told the BBC: "The way it's happened... that on Christmas Day they've done this to our members is disgraceful."
Administrators warned of "substantial redundancies" over the coming days.
This is because no buyer has been found to save the company.
A number of staff will be retained to help return parcels to customers and help with winding down the company, said administrators Ernst & Young.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said it was "shocking" to have "sprung this announcement once all the Christmas deliveries have been completed".
Why is it not mentioned in the title that it's City Link?

It was a fairly long title and I didn't think City Link would be much of a household name to most people on here
It's sucks about the job losses, but I'm glad they won't be delivering any parcels for the time being (hopefully never again). They are, along with HDNL/Yodel, the worst consumer delivery network I've ever had experience with. Some of my parcels have been delivered fine, many others have turned up with outer packaging damage ranging from minor to severe, and they even once delivered my parcel to a house several roads away because my house was "difficult to find." This is despite the fact that I live in a semi-detached house on a standard residential road in a big town. Why is it so fucking difficult for some of these companies to do their single jobs adequately?
I don't think you can call City Link a 'delivery company'. All they seem to do is flip a coin, and if it lands on heads, maybe, just MAYBE, you'll receive your package within 3 months.

Look at it this way, all the incompetent people lost their job.
Look at it this way, all the incompetent people lost their job.
And now those incompetent people will infiltrate other companies and spread their disease of incompentence to actually competent workers.
This is the beginning of the end.

In any decent company they will get fired if they even get hired.
To be fair my experience with City Link has been pretty shoddy to say the least. Maybe if delivery services want to stay open they should work at being more reliable.
DPD for example is the best delivery service ever. They send you a link on the day of delivery with a real time google maps tracker of the delivery van with a 2 hour estimation window of when your delivery should arrive, what number delivery you'rs is, and what number delivery they are currently on. More services need to take notice of everything they are doing right.
I never had issues with City Link, never had damaged parcels and always on time. But it has been a few years since I used them but when I did I used them a LOT.
I like DPD but maybe thats because its a German company and if they dont do their job right theyll get shot

But I've noticed that for some reason sometimes DPD sends a text with an estimated delivery time and even the name of the driver and not deliver that day/email saying that you weren't home and have to reschedule.
This happened to me twice and both times when I rescheduled for the next day the package arrived bang on time, and both times when this happened I received the first text on a Sunday which was strange to begin with. I still think DPD is the best service around and I'm definitely not faulting them for not delivering on Sundays, but texting me saying my parcel will be delivered between 12 and 2 and then not even bothering is a bit shoddy. I'm guessing it might be a fault on their automated services.

Good to see they follow their traditions.

That's why Overclockers UK always delivers through DPD and I get my shit on time and super fast and I love them for it.

It is just part of the plan to germanize the whole world.

I agree, DPD is great for delivery of any kind. Fast and available pretty much any time you realistically need them.

Same here, in fact, I was on first name terms with the guy who used to deliver for them here a few years back, because as a teenager I worked at a petrol station which he'd always fill up at on his way in or out of my town.
They were also one of the few people who would actually get a parcel to anywhere north of Dundee without charging extra for it being "remote" back then, and get it there on time.
well that's what happens when you have shitty service. there is a reason UPS and Fedex are THE delivery companies.
It was a fairly long title and I didn't think City Link would be much of a household name to most people on here
I've never even heard of it, but then again, I'm an American, so that is probably why
well that's what happens when you have shitty service. there is a reason UPS and Fedex are THE delivery companies.
Not really in the UK.
UPS is useless in Scotland, because it considers anything north of Dundee to be remote, so slaps on a massive extra surcharge (There are two cities north of Dundee - Aberdeen and Inverness)
Fedex is okay, but by no means THE delivery company. DPD is probably the closest to holding that crown, but the Royal Mail is as good when they do a parcel delivery.

Considering I see more DPD vans compared to any Fedex or UPS shows that DPD is the fucking king.
Also UPS drive around in those trash fucking box vans.
So is City Link basically the UK equivalent of DHL?
Survival of the fittest, ey lads?

IMO, DPD are the best courier in the UK right now. Reliable, quick and reasonably cheap.

No, DHL is the UK equivalent of DHL.
(Strangely though, despite how prevalent DHL is I have only had one package shipped directly by them.)
I've only had one package delivered by City Link and by the time I got it the delivery guy had carefully opened the box, taken a messy shit inside, and closed it back up again. I complained and was told that it's actually official company policy to do that with every package. Not surprised they went out of business
city link murdered my family
So is City Link basically the UK equivalent of DHL?
Having had every single package sent via them irreparably destroyed I can only hope they are next.
UKMail is a pretty decent company too, if you're not in for delivery, they'll pop a card through your door telling you that they'll be attempting redelivery the next day. Had a bit of a bad run in with DPD where my new computer was pretty much broke on delivery and had to be RMA'd right away. the fact that I was th elast person they delivered to and it had been bouncing around in the van all day didn't help, and then when they were coming to collect it for the RMA, they cancelled the time slot and didn't tell me or the company I was sending it back t.
City Link has always been hit and miss for me, them and HDNL/Yodel (which for some retarded fucking reason Amazon uses) the products normally either arrive on time, or don't, and by don't I mean they never arrive.
Out of all the courier services in the UK I've gotta say DPD, UKMail, DHL (mostly for overseas stuff) and even fucking Royal Mail (purely because of ease of access) are the best to go with.
There's a reason they earned the nickname Shitty Link.
Nothing of value was lost, UKMail and DPD had already far surpassed them.
