Because he might have warez, and he can just easily take a snapshot of his steam games list, whiteout his steam account name and whatever else he wants to whiteout, and be done with it.
That authentication error is commonly associated with Cracked versions.

It works fine on Vista, I've played HL1, BS, and OpFor at one time or another.
I just installed HL1 a few minutes ago and it works fine after I told DEP to shove it.
A few people have this problem, try making sure the resolution is right in config.cfg
Verify game files.
Compatibility Mode on the hl.exe?
Create a desktop short cut:
Target: "F:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 70 -d3d
HL wouldn't work for me unless I ran it as admin in Vista.
