VGA ia analogue, HDMI is digital, Somewhere along the line (Likely the DVI to VGA Adapter) The digital lines are not connected to anything.
DVI->VGA Works because the DVI pinout leaves space for the Analogue lines to fit withtin. You can't go the other way, the adapter has no "Converter" in it.
