Valve has paid out over $10M to 400 contributors and partners who created content for TF2
Over the weekend we hit a new landmark, with over ten million dollars paid out to over 400 contributors and partners. And close to $250,000 of that figure will be paid out to the sixty-plus people who created the Robotic Boogaloo update.
If you just read that last paragraph and are kicking yourself for not making that beard of bees sketch a reality, here's the good news: We've also done a bunch of work improving the item submission tool, so it's never been easier to submit. The tool now automatically tests new creations against a set of standards, meaning anything you create is now significantly more likely to be game-ready.
You can now also see how your items will render on TF2 characters within the tool, making the creation process itself even quicker. Plus, every item submitted through the tool will now be tagged with a gold star, showing everyone that it's been vetted. FYI, our next update is going to ship exclusively with "gold star" items, and there's going to be no limit on how many we'll include. (Check out the Workshop FAQ for more info.)
In short, there's never been an easier, faster or more rewarding time to submit to the Workshop. If you're not making that beard of bees dream a reality, let's face it, at this point it's probably a motivational problem on your end.
Damn. I wonder how rich some people got from it.
and how much profit did they get from these items?
That's only about $25,000 for each creator. I mean really it doesn't make them rich unless we're talking about people like Larolaro who contributed like 25 very successful items, so some contributors are only get a few thousand. Still the contributors are getting a nice chunk of change. Though I mean in most cases it's only ~10% of the actual money made which is sort of a rip off, but they could be receiving nothing at all.

Hell I'll take an extra 25k any day.

yeah 'only' 25k
For those like me who are unfamiliar with tf2, what kind of content are we talking about here? Surely nobody was paid 25k for making a hat.

they only make ~10 percent?
holy shit that's like nothing.

More than one hat. Sometimes a gun, but mostly headgear.
I agree, the game is silly.

Im pretty sure Valve said they were paid 25% and not 10%.
yeah 'only' 25k
Like I said some people are getting just 1k and others are getting way more. They could be making like five times that and Valve would still get the other half. I may not have worded that well, it's 1 AM, sort of tired.
Keep in mind this is a f2p game which valve has supported (at no real cost to you) for 6 years.

oh, okay.
if it was the other way around that'd be total bullshit

didn't know that "6 years" meant "2 years" now.

I thought I first read it was 10% on their original upload website, did it get bumped up or did I read something wrong?

It's always been 25%, dunno what you read.

Oh. That's much better then. My bad on the information.
If its 25% towards the creators than the amount of money Valve must be making from these hats must be staggering. 30 Million?
I still don't understand who buys this stuff to begin with honestly

Assuming there are no silly hidden costs in the store on Valve's side, Valve has made 30 million off of community/partner weapons and hats. Mind you, that does not include keys, paint, original purchases of TF2, or the console versions of The Orange Box. Valve could theoretically re-create The Purge (which got over 34 million in box office revenue in one weekend!) 10 times.

your math is extremely inaccurate. it's about $2500 per contributor, according to the figures in the op.

For someone thats gets 1000 every 2 months, thats very good
honestly i think people that actually bought TF2 are more entitled to more stuff than the f2p people, did valve give a reward to the people that bought it? besides that useless badge?

Didn't the polycount guys get like over $45'000? Making items is not easy. But still $25000 is A LOT for modeling a few items. If you compare the pay per workhour I am sure that 3D-modelers that work in the industry get less.
people that like hats in the game of team fortress 2.
I liked hats, maybe even too much. I had a cool hat or two and a loudout for each class that was far superior to any other. But I never paid for any of it.
Except in the form of pre-ordering the Orange Box for the price of $45.

25 grand is more than enough to support me and my family for a couple of years.
I still don't understand who buys this stuff to begin with honestly
People spend up to $3500 for one hat. And it's not one hat, there are tons of hats that sell for over $1000.
