EU Considering A Ban On Russian Vodka, Furs, Diamonds, And Caviar
EU leaders will hold their first detailed discussion next week of specific steps they can take against Russia if Ukraine's elections are not free and fair, including restrictions ranging from luxury goods imports to an oil and gas ban.
A two-page document setting out three scenarios - low-intensity, medium-intensity and high-intensity sanctions - was circulated to member states last month and will form a basis of discussion at a leaders' summit on May 27.Under the first, low-intensity scenario, according to details from the document provided to Reuters, the EU would impose restrictions on imports of Russian luxury goods including diamonds, precious metals, furs, vodka and caviar.
In terms of exports, the EU could restrict the sale of fertilizers, chemicals, tires and vessels to Russia, although components for the steel and nuclear industry would be excluded. There would also be restrictions on arms imports and exports.
At the toughest, high-intensity end of the scale, the EU is considering capital-market restrictions, a potential prohibition on new investment in Russia, the strict application of EU regulatory rules on any Russian assets held in EU companies, and ultimately a complete ban on imports of oil and gas from Russia.
The measures under consideration by the EU are what have been dubbed "stage three" sanctions, following asset freezes and travel bans on Russian and Ukrainian individuals - the first step - and restrictions on some companies.
-snip rate dumb move on so post doesn't disrupt thread-
Replace caviar with either Spanish Sturgeon caviar, or just use the... you know... thousands of other fish species which have far better tasting eggs?
Try walleye(zander), sauteed perch/bluegill roe, or go the cheap and invest into Asian Carp caviar.
People have way to high standards when it comes to eating fish eggs. All of them are edible, and most of them are far better tasting than caviar.
By the way... You Euros should really just give Poland the rights to make vodka, and say that Russia is no longer allowed to use the vodka trademark. That'll really piss them off.

whats really stopping people that hardcore though?
can't be THAT hard to try it, surely someone who isn't in russia sells it.
Uh, Poland already makes wodka. Hell, Swedish wodka exists. Why wouldn't somebody outside of Russia be allowed to make it?
That'll show em!
send an angry letter too
NOO
send TWOO angry letters!
do you understand the economic effects of being unable to export most of your nation's core products to a significant portion of your existing market?
Uh, Poland already makes wodka. Hell, Swedish wodka exists. Why wouldn't somebody outside of Russia be allowed to make it?
Everyone is allowed to, in respect of their state regulation. Russia is the world biggest producer, consumer and exporter. Cutting them out of the European market would mean a huge loss, as we're big consumers, but nowhere as big producers.
This would royally piss Russia off, and definitely hit them where it hurts. I like it.
Noooooo, my Stolichnaya
:c

meh, rum is infinitely better than vodka anyway
This plan is flawed. If Russians drink all vodka that was meant to EU, they will forget that sanctions exist and all has been for nothing.
Years of scheming and planning have finally paid off.
Now that Russian vodka will be banned, Polish vodka can reign supreme!
AHAHAHAHAHA

What's next? Ban on Russian people within EU?
-wait it's eu not us snip-
Do, not, touch our vodka we bring from Russia and Estonia.
Hehehehehe our vodka exports will now triple hehehehe
*rubs hands together greedily*
Russian vodka sucks anyway.
Polish vodka is literally the best.
Uh, doesn't a huge portion of diamonds come from Russia
What's next? Ban on Russian people within EU?
That would be counter-productive. Russia would have to protect them and be forced to annex all of EU.
Uh, doesn't a huge portion of diamonds come from Russia
Might be wrong, but don't they come mainly from Africa and Southern America?

You are implying that Russia will stop making it if that happens
Didn't Poland actually invent Vodka?
Didn't Poland actually invent Vodka?
Depends whom you ask, it's either Poland or Russia.

If only delicacy worked that way. Beluga Sturgeon would be a lot less critically endangered.
diamonds are actually pretty common, they have as much value as their sellers want despite not really being in high demand.
its just that its a massive fucking monopoly on obtaining them, they'd be able to source them elsewhere and effectively kill off the russian diamond trade.
ya the dubeers corporcorporation has like 97% of the worlds diamond mines under their control, industrial use is the only place that really consumes tons of diamonds and they replaced natural with synthetic like in the 60s
