• Need some second opinions on a Subaru

I don't usually post here but it seems like a great place to ask for second opinions about a car. Lately I have been trying to get a 95 to 00 Impreza (Manual) that doesn't have major issues with a $2500-3000 spending limit. So recently my co-worker offered to sell me his 2000 Impreza L (Automatic) with 67k miles for $4,000, from what I've seen it has few minor dents which can be popped out. My question is, is it worth the money and could I sell it for more then I bought it for?
I'd keep looking for a Manual and resort to buying his if you REALLY need the car soon, or if you just can't find a Manual.
Yeah I have a get around car, that's probably what I'll end up doing and looking for a manual.
That's a killer deal for a 2000 Impreza with such low miles. If I were you, I'd hop on it even though you're looking for a manual. My '99 Impreza OBS is the 4 speed auto and I shift through the speeds like I would in a manual. There's also the sport mode (selecting 3 gives it more aggressive shifts) I've also driven a Legacy GT that had a 5 speed (like what would come in an Impreza) and I didn't really like it that much. Subaru did a really great job making their 4eat automatic. It's the only automatic (other than the 3spd auto in my truck) that I've actually liked. I could do some sort of in-car video of shifting and going over it if you'd like. Oh, and you should change the range of Subaru Impreza's that you're looking for from 95-00 to 97-01. Before 97, the dash was.. not the best. That's also when all the cars became AWD and they switched to Phase 2 motors/transmissions which have more power.
dont buy a subaru
dont buy a subaru
Don't listen to this guy. Buy an automatic, specially one from '97-00. The manuals on Subaru's aren't exactly SUPER good. The automatics, however are quite amazing. [editline]26th December 2011[/editline] I am envious that you are even able to find a '00 Subaru impreza automatic. I have been looking for one of those for so freaking long. Buy it now or I might.
I've never been in an automatic that was better than mediocre. If you MUST get an auto, at least get a dual clutch flappy paddle one...
I've never been in an automatic that was better than mediocre. If you MUST get an auto, at least get a dual clutch flappy paddle one...
I have yet to see a flappy paddle subaru.
That's true, I'm just saying. I've never been in an automatic that wasn't a piece of crap. So if you're getting a high performance car like an impreza, and don't have the option for flappy paddles, You're better off with manual. Unless you just plan on driving around for show...You'll never be able to outrun a similar HP car with a stick, by the time the car downshifts and starts to go you'll have lost.
I don't think he's getting an Impreza for high performance. He'd be looking for a WRX or STi if he wanted that.
Even still it's not your typical economy shit face Toyota Camry.
To be honest I was thinking of doing a wrx swap eventually...
subarus, especially a outback, are total hipster cars

You can throw it from D into 3 no matter how fast you're going, which downshifts it to third and gives it more aggressive shifts. I agree that most automatics are pieces of crap, but Subaru really did a good job making the 4eat. You can drive it just like a manual. The computer limits downshifting so you can only do it below 3k (peak torque is at 3500) and the sweet spot that I've found for shifting up is 5500 (redline is 6200 I believe) The 4eat is also known for having better gear ratios for autox and rallyx. I've heard people say that in the 5mt, 2nd is too low and 3rd is too high, so they end up having to shift back and forth all the time.

I would always shift gears -- I never put it directly in drive. I put 30,000 hard miles on that tranny and it's never even slipped once -- really a great automatic. And it would also not allow the transmission to downshift over a certain RPM -- And this was in a car that had no ECU. Shit ratio, though. Floored and running as fast as the little 4G15 would in 3rd, I douldn't break 100MPH. My GPS still has the highest speed I ever got in that thing registered -- 99.1MPH
I think everyone who has a 4 speed and 4 numbers to shift to on an auto gearbox does it

I've done launches, rallying, snow drifting, donuts, etc. It appears to not damage the transmission at all. The ratios in the 4eat are pretty tall, but they seem to be just right some how. First tops at 35ish, second at about 60, and third will go all the way to the speed limiter at 110mph (tested it once before on an empty interstate) and then I could throw it into D and just cruise at 110. When I upshift at 5500 or so rpms (where my peak HP is) it will put me down to around 3500 rpms (where my peak torque is) and takes off pretty good, for an engine that has been ran out of oil several times now.
subarus, especially a outback, are total hipster cars
I see nothing hipster about subarus.
You dont live in the US, that's why
I see more subs than i do classic muscle cars...So i guess that makes said classics even more hipster than subs? I'm going to have to agree with adam on this one, i don't see anything hipster with subarus. In fact i haven't really seen anything hipster with cars at ALL, excluding MAYBE like a ricer or something, but still...
Every Subaru commercial, like the honeymoon in the forest, is hipstactular. I went to Ashville, North Carolina once. If anyone has been there, you know those faggots infest the place. They were outbacks and foresters everywhere.
A Subaru can't be hipster and I don't think you know what a hipster is.
depens on where you live bruh
Subaru's are excellent on mileage, so if you're not ABSOLUTELY set on getting a Manual, the Impreza will last you a while. I own an Impreza (automatic 120k miles) and a Legacy (manual 280k miles), both have worked out fantastic for me. Best part about Subaru's IMO is the ease at which someone can work on them. Everything is easy to get to (especially for preventative Mx, i.e. oil and fluid changes, filters and hoses, etc). The parts are extremely durable, I replaced the timing belt on the Impreza a couple weeks ago, looked in pretty good shape considering it had never been replaced or messed with. Only downside, like some have mentioned could be the ratio's and the fact that Subaru make their cars for the average asian Joe, someone who needs an A-to-B car that can be maintained easily and efficiently. They're not initially made for sporty stuff, unless you buy one tuned for such sports out of a dealership. Edit: And yes, this goes for Impreza's too, which are sometimes touted as "high performance", but high performance within reason. Thats my piece anyways.
yeah a regular impreza isn't really "high performance"
I somewhat disagree on the regular Impreza's not being high performance. I can agree that they aren't as high performance as WRX's and STi's, but they are higher performance stock than something like a civic or other smaller cars. A few reasons are; Lower center of gravity due to the Boxer engine, allows for better handling from the factory AWD provides better weight distribution throughout the vehicle, as well as high performance on dirt, wet roads, snow, ice, etc. I've heard that regular Impreza's and Impreza Wagon's are similar to my OBS, and my OBS handles incredible. I've heard power steering sucks and is usually loose, but there is no slop in my steering what so ever and it's nice and tight. I would consider Impreza's affordable performance cars. Plus, I've heard NA Impreza's can outperform STi's and WRX's in things like rallyx and autox, since you don't have to wait for a turbo to spool.

For a car with such a small engine that needs to be shifted so often, manual is a necessity.
For a car with such a small engine that needs to be shifted so often, manual is a necessity.
What? I can't even think of a way to respond properly to a post like this According to your logic, shouldn't it be the exact opposite? You don't want to shift all the time, so you would get an automatic? Either way, the 2.2 is known for its bottom end torque. If you know how to utilize all the features of the 4eat, you can go from 40 up to 60 fairly quick with just kicking it out of OD in 4th.
it seems like a great place to ask for second opinions about a car
Where the hell did you get this idea? :v:
