Hey Facepunch,
Where can I begin?
Lately I have been having some problems with my new PC. It's got an i5 3570K CPU OC'd to 4.4 and a AMD Radeon 7950 at stock, checked for updates and it's all up-to-date.
Basically when I play games they usually either:
1) crash to desktop, either by simply closing down, sometimes giving me the error message "Game has stopped responding" but most of the time it simply closes down
OR
2) the game freezes up and crashes Windows so it has to restart (pretty much the game freezes then after a few seconds my PC restarts with the message "Windows had to shutdown unexpectedly")
These crashes happen to every game.
As well as that on certain games (confirmed: STALKER Call of Pripyat, Killing Floor, some MMO, pretty sure it also happened on the MMO Fire Fall but stopped) when in the main menu/pause menu/options/any other game tabs it seems that they cause my HDD/SSD (I opened up the case to pinpoint the noises and it's either the HDD or SSD. Can the SSD even make such noises? There may have been no files on the HDD but that is probably the culprit as I put my ear right up to them and it's coming from there) to emit high pitched irritating noises, all of which are different. For example: In STALKER CoP's main menu it's comparable to a kettle boiling, which may change if I clicked on and entered Options tab which causes it to have a different pitch (may go higher or lower, but it remains the same sound - occurs on all games), however a different sound would occur on Killing Floor's main menu and so on. Such noises shouldn't occur, should they? I would also like to note that all my files such as my games, Windows and other files were installed on the SSD, but I have recently re-installed onto the HDD to test if it (noises, crashes) happened on that, which it did. Again these noises aren't just the normal beeps when fans change speed or the fans themselves, this is noise emitting from the actual hard drives.

My CPU temps for all 4 cores when under load (CS:GO) were:
Core#0 - Min:26 Max:51
Core#1 - Min:23 Max:52
Core#2 - Min:30 Max:54
Core#3 - Min:23 Max:47
I tried testing it with no overclock but it made no difference, the crashes persisted.
The GPU temp was 64 at it's highest. I can back up these results, I tested both the CPU/GPU temps when the problems started to arise after I began playing games to see if it was overheating or not.
Tested memory with memtest86+ overnight, 15 passes. Scanned hard drives for problems, pass.
Also getting some BSODs, Windows freezes when surfing the web or whatever else and then it just BSODs and gives me the "Windows had to shutdown to prevent damage" message.
Oh yeah and when I re-installed onto the HDD, there's 4 black bars around my monitor, whats up with that?
TL;DR Games crash/Windows crashes/HDD and/or SSD make irritaing noises.
Any help?
Sounds like either the graphics card or drivers are damaged. If you haven't tried reinstalling the drivers, try that
I 1 up'd that: I re-installed Windows and pretty much everything so nothing should be corrupted or damaged since it's a fresh install. Well since I don't have an actual Windows install disc I had to use a USB but all in all it's re-installed. There is one slight problem however as I was saying near the end of the first post, since re-installing there's 4 black bars around my monitor, it's like it's zoomed out.
Anyway regarding the noise in certain games I'm going to disconnect the HDD and see if they persist.
a SSD shouldn't make any noise.
