SPOKANE, Wash. -- A 37-year-old man says he was banned from a Starbucks in Washington state after asking a 16-year-old barista out to dinner, CBS Spokane affiliate KREM reports. The man, who was not identified by KREM since he has not been charged with a crime, said he was at Starbucks in Spokane last week and wrote a note asking out a barista. “I was flirted with by a barista. For some reason she thought I was funny. Said I was funny. So I gave her a note to see if she’d be interested in dinner,” the man wrote in a Facebook post. He said that when he went back the next day, a police officer told him he was banned from the Starbucks. Spokane police said businesses are allowed to refuse service to people for as long as they see fit. But the man says he’s facing discrimination due to his age. “I know the female Starbucks barista was of legal age to date,” the man said. “I broke no laws. I merely took a chance with my heart. I’m tired of hearing the word ‘creep’ as any black person or gay person is tired of hearing certain words. I have a whole webpage dedicated to age gap love.” He asked his friends on Facebook to call Starbucks and complain -- but the request was met with opposition. Many people took to the Spokane Starbucks’ Facebook page to praise the store for barring the man from the location.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/spokane-man-banned-from-starbucks-after-asking-teen-barista-on-date/
“I broke no laws. I merely took a chance with my heart. I’m tired of hearing the word ‘creep’ as any black person or gay person is tired of hearing certain words.
Spokane police said businesses are allowed to refuse service to people for as long as they see fit. But the man says he’s facing discrimination due to his age.
We don't hate you because you are almost 40 years old. We hate you because you tried to get it on with someone underage.
So yeah there's a video in this article: http://www.krem.com/news/local/spokane-county/spokane-man-claims-ageism-after-being-banned-from-starbucks-for-hitting-on-teen-barista/380786430 So what likely happened is that a 16 year old worker received a creepy note from a 37 old man asking for the woman to go out on a date. The 16 year old girl then shared the note with her manager, and then the manager called the police. The police wasn't called because the girl was 16, the police was called because there was something in that note that warranted the police to tell him to fuck off. I'm basing this on the fact that he's acting like a total fucking victim, and thought that woman finding him funny = LOOKING TO LOVE
“I know the female Starbucks barista was of legal age to date. i really do think big age gap dating below 20 is super creepy, people change so much in those years from ending highscool to doing college/uni and starting work. I dunno if he should have been banned on asking her out once, but if he did pester her a few times i can see no problem in banning him.
i really do think big age gap dating below 20 is super creepy, people change so much in those years from ending highscool to doing college/uni and starting work.
16 is pretty fucking young. A 16 year old is in 10th/11th grade (Year 10/11, Sophomore/Junior).
I read this earlier. Dude is acting like a fucking schmuck. First off Its pretty creepy when someone who is nearly 40 years of age asks out a 16 year old. Second of all the girl was working and when people are at work there are things you don't just do. Just because someone laughs at something you said or says you're funny does not give you the green light to start asking for a date and shit. I'm willing to bet there is more to this story. I'm willing to bet this guy is a regular customer and has been acting weird the entire time. I highly doubt the manager would have called the cops just for this. But at the same time I do understand if this was the first time it might seem a bit harsh to react as such..but people need to realize at the same time....a 16 year old girl could be intimated by a 37 year old man. So the manager was only protecting his employee which is a good thing. This guy should have kept his mouth shut, all its gonna do is put him out there as a creep.
Creepy does not mean illegal though... asking people out on dates is not illegal. dudes a fucking asshole about it though.
Creepy does not mean illegal though... asking people out on dates is not illegal. dudes a fucking asshole about it though.
It was entirely legal (and justified) for Starbucks to kick him out.
I mean, she could have just said no. It's fucking creepy, but is it really necessary to ban him for it?
Sure the guy may be a creep who knows but can we please not pretend that he knew she was 16
Sure the guy may be a creep who knows but can we please not pretend that he knew she was 16
He literally knew that she was 16, that's why she tried asking her for a "date"
He literally knew that she was 16, that's why she tried asking her for a "date"
i don't think he knew her exact age, he just knew that she was at least 16 because she had a job at starbucks
He literally knew that she was 16, that's why she tried asking her for a "date"
Doesn't say that anywhere Think it's kinda funny that because he's 40 he gets barred but if he was some hot shot young dude there'd be no problem
Doesn't say that anywhere Think it's kinda funny that because he's 40 he gets barred but if he was some hot shot young dude there'd be no problem
So what you are saying is you think this guy, even if hes a total asshole about it has a core of a point? older people get treated differently? double standard?
So what you are saying is you think this guy, even if hes a total asshole about it has a core of a point? older people get treated differently? double standard?
All I'm saying is that we've heard of plenty of times where a guy will ask a waitress out with no problem and it's just funny that when it's a 40 year old dude (who gave her a note that asked her out to dinner, didn't even ask her verbally) he's fucking gone
Doesn't say that anywhere Think it's kinda funny that because he's 40 he gets barred but if he was some hot shot young dude there'd be no problem
If I ran a starbucks and a staff member said that a customer made them feel uncomfortable id have no hesitation in barring them, their age doesn't matter. I think most places would be the same.
I just googled what Washington State's Age of Consent is, and it's 16. So he didn't break any laws, it's a tad creepy, but eh Starbucks has every right to ban him for that. It's not nearly as creepy as one story my best friend has. She used to work at Dunkin Donuts, and her store was also tied to one inside a Walmart (so sometimes she would have to work in that one). One day near christmas she was, and this guy who looked like Santa Claus comes up, leans over the counter and goes "Have you been naughty miss ;)" and it was one of the creepiest things my friend has ever endured so tbh I'm not against stores banning people for being creeps towards employees.
this wouldn't be an issue if they just bloody talked with the guy, banning him outright is a bit harsh

Sure it's creepy, but not against the law(depending on state for americans).
If i was the manager i would have just explained the situation to the guy and asked nicely if he would leave.
Doesn't say that anywhere Think it's kinda funny that because he's 40 he gets barred but if he was some hot shot young dude there'd be no problem
did you read the article? the note was creepy and the employee thought it was creepy enough to tell someone about it as for the 40 year knowing she was 16... just look at the shit he says "I OWN A SITE DEDICATED TO AGE GAP LOVE, I'M TIRED OF BEING CALLED A CREEP :'''''''(" He knew exactly what he was doing.
He could've easily assumed her to be 19 or 22.
imo it wouldn't have been as creepy if it weren't for the fact that he owns a website dedicated to age gap love.
If i was the manager i would have just explained the situation to the guy and asked nicely if he would leave.
You go, girl! :v:
If you're trying to have a dinner with somebody who's young enough to be your kid, you should probably rethink a lot of choices you've done in your life
I mean Clint Eastwood seems to be doing pretty fine going out with women who are over 30 years younger than him.
I don't think he actually did anything wrong or creepy on the assumption that he didn't know she was 16. A lot of teenagers look older than they are and people can make that mistake. A lot of people were assuming I was way older than I actually was when I was 15, even assuming I was a teacher instead of a student. If his note was like "ey gurl want some fuk" then I can definitely see why he'd get banned but if it was a polite "Do you want to go on a date? Here's my number" note then it's an overreaction. As a girl, I'd be more flattered if I got a note asking me out, and just never call him or decline if I had to and only take action if he did get creepy with it by asking me multiple times or doing stalker shit. The age gap dating website thing did rub me the wrong way at first, but then I thought about it and realized that as long as it's like, above age of consent and not some weird pedo shit then that's fine. By no means my or almost everyone elses' cup of tea but if two of age people want to date I don't think I should really judge them, even if they're like 20 or even 50 years apart in age. [editline]e[/editline] of course I'm being super forgiving but I wouldn't be surprised if the dude's actually a creep and I'm giving him too much slack :v:
To compare your struggles of being an old dude trying to fuck a near-child and being called creepy to "any black or gay person" really paints you as a totally horrible, inconsiderate person imo.
"Near-child" is pushing it. 16 is over the age of consent in several US states and in many countries.
