We needed a new thread.
FAQ.
What is power metal?
Power metal is a style of heavy metal music combining characteristics of traditional metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Germany, Italy, Scandinavia), Brazil and Japan (early Visual Kei bands) with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards.
What is it about?
Common subjects of power metal include but are not limited to:
- Steel
- Swords
- Dragons
- Vikings
- Motorcycles
- Dragons with swords
- Killing dragons with a sword
- The Crimean War
- Other power metal
- Pirates
- Questing the lands to kill a dragon with a sword
Why should I listen to power metal?
Because it's the music of MEN. Who doesn't want to be more like Eric Adams?
What masters of the musical realm are skilled enough to unleash these truly awe-inspiring works of musical bliss into this feeble world?
Well, the most popular bands are as followed:
-Hammerfall
-Rhapsody of Fire
-Sabaton
-Blind Guardian
-Helloween
-Stratovarius
-Iced Earth
-Gamma Ray
-Edguy
But there are much more! In fact, i'm going to post some less known power metal now. Search those bands above on youtube, they're quite good.
Note: there's quite a few different styles of the genre, so don't judge the rest of the following just because you don't like the first song or something.
Avantasia - The Tower
(This might be a spoiler actually, it's part of a two album long metal opera.)

Hibria - High Speed Breakout

Astral Doors - Black Rain
(as one youtube commenter puts it, it's Dio with more cigarettes.)

Iron Fire - Kill for Metal

Zandelle - Queen Anne's Revenge

Demons and Wizards - Blood on my Hands
(DaW is actually a joint project between Blind Guardian and Iced Earth, they sound great together. It shows a great fusion between American and European power metal.)

Nanowar - Outrue
(An all gay parody band, they basically make fun of the cheesiness of power metal. They still manage to make good music.)

Once again, these are just less known bands. The more popular ones above are famous for a reason, listen to their stuff!
This is both the most gay and most majestic and epic feeling metal genre
i approve
What's wrong with the old thread?
In before Dragonforce fanboys

I love Power Metal, everything about it is awesome. Hell, even Dragonforce have at least one good song.
Iced Earth, Rhapsody and 3 Inches are awesome.

Dont mind me, just posting some Stratovarius here.
Please use the old thread now that it's apparently in operation.
If power metal wasn't about dragons/vikings or swords I'd be totally into it
motorcycles are cool though

75 % of Power Metal is about vague stuff like feelings, coping with life, etc.
And the rest is pretty much about war in general.
Believe it or not, there are very few bands and songs that actually are about dragons.
I can count them with one hand.
But again, no point in letting this thread go to waste:

Of course Dragonforce have one good song, they've only ever written one, they just keep using it on different albums :v:

Looooolllll
Gotta admit they're really catchy though
I haven't heard much Power Metal, but it's really fun and silly to listen to at times.
Deadly Sinners is a funny ass song. You can't take power metal too seriously.

Honestly, Dragonforce is the band that got me into metal. I still listen to them occasionally; their material actually has a lot of hidden melodies and hooks in it.
[editline]7th December 2010[/editline]
But yeah I pretty much love any power/melodic/symphonic/folk metal in general
What Z3r0747 said, I don't really listen to them anymore though. But they're a fun band and they were amazing live when I saw them back in 06. Sure they don't get all the notes right but they know how to put up a show and get the crowd going.
