Putin 'elected Russian president'
Vladimir Putin has been elected Russian president for the third time, exit polls suggest, after spending the last four years as the country's PM.
The exit polls gave Mr Putin about 60% of the vote, meaning that he should avoid a run-off with his nearest rival, Communist Gennady Zyuganov.
Officials say turnout was higher than for the last election in 2008.
But opposition groups have reported widespread fraud, with many people voting more than once.
They have called for mass protests in central Moscow on Monday.
Meanwhile thousands of supporters of Mr Putin have gathered with Russian flags and banners outside the Kremlin for a concert to celebrate his victory.
High turnout
The electoral commission published preliminary results, with 14% of districts counted, showing Mr Putin gaining nearly 62%, and Mr Zyuganov just under 18%.
The other three candidates were in single digits.
The turnout was 58.3% by 18:00 Moscow time (14:00 GMT), considerably higher than in 2008 elections. Electoral officials forecast a final turnout of 62.3%.
The election was held against a backdrop of popular discontent, sparked by allegations of widespread fraud during December's parliamentary elections in favour of Mr Putin's United Russia party.
Observer organisations said there had been thousands of violations including so-called carousel voting, with busloads of voters being driven around to different polling stations.
The alleged fraud came despite the presence of thousands of independent observers and web cameras at polling stations.
Opposition blogger and anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny told the BBC: "Grandiose scale of falsifications, especially in Moscow... mass use of carousel voting."
Russia is gonna be joining in with the Arab spring no doubt!
A civilian uprising in Russia would be crushed unless they had large chunks of the military supporting them.
Russia is gonna be joining in with the Arab spring no doubt!
No. We're too dumb. And scared. No one will support two and a half crazed people who will get to the central squares of Moscow just to be beaten shitless.

Large chunks of the military supported the protesters in the Arab spring.
Has anybody seen the other Presidential candidates? they ain't exactly great.

But tens of thousands of you already did protest after the parliamentary elections
What has Putin done that is so bad? Other than rigging votes and killing some people of course

Who cares? it creates dissent.
But tens of thousands of you already did protest after the parliamentary elections
And what happened? Tens of thousands in Moscow is hardly even 1% of the whole population. We're 'crazed revolutionaries' in others' eyes. It doesn't matter. It does nothing - government just gets away with everything they do with a few more promises, which won't ever be done.

from what i understand he kind of pulled a Stalin. while he helped russia recover from the collapse of the soviet union he made the government extremely corrupt (and it's pretty much a certainty that people working for him had reporters and other voices of opposition killed). now he won't give up power and many claim fraud (buses of people going to different places to vote for him more than once).
so basically he was okay for awhile even if he had to do bad things to help russia, but now that things are okay people are pissed he's still around and thus making things worse. I seem to remember Medvedev fired a shitload of people Putin had placed in government because they were all corrupt dickholes
Nothing's gonna change. Oppositon pricks will whine for a while, and then the country will be back to it's usual state. At least Russia's a stable country.
So I see the webcams were a good idea and Putin has somewhat of a sound mind.

More or less that, just exclude the 'helped to recover' - he didn't. When he was first elected, Russia was already more or less stable and standing quite straight up. Last crisis ended in 98, war in Chechen Republic was over with satisfying results for both sides of conflict. Horizon was already clear by that time.

Yeah, this is kind of sheep I was talking about in last post. Stable for him means a 'shithole where everything is x2 overpriced because of corruption'.

So I'm a sheep now, huh. Zhirinovsky wants to start a nationalist country, he's more of a clown than a president. Zyuganov wants to bring USSR back, that isn't going to be good, right. Mironov is generally unpopular, never heard of his plans. Prokhorov is the dark horse, he was predicted to be the president last year, but now he has the same rate as Zhirinovsky. He knows nothing, should've stayed in his business. Those guys would ruin the country, while Putin and his "corruption" will keep the country in the stable state. I was born in this country and I've never seen any problems with corruption in my town.
I thought Putin only got elected twice?

didn't know this was a third
Elected? i wouldn't be surprised if he rode in on a bear and yanked the presidency from his opponent hands!
