Eyewitnesses said the fire appeared to have started when a projector exploded in the basement of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building just before 12:30.
The roof space is still well alight. It is feared large parts of the art school have been destroyed.

Final year students were said to have been preparing for their end of year degree show in the building when the blaze broke out. The deadline for submissions to the degree was 17:00.
SFRS Chief Officer Alasdair Hay said there had been "significant spread" of flames within the building but would not comment on speculation it did not have a sprinkler system installed.
I live just round the corner from GSofA, the street has been filled with thick black smoke for hours, and there's a horrible acrid smell even inside my flat. The smoke is still coming through the street even now, but it seems to have calmed down a bit.
It's fortunate that there have been no confirmed casualties, but it must be so devastating for the students that have lost going on 4 years' work. It's especially tragic since the Mackintosh building is such an iconic Scottish building.
A fire on the day of the deadline for the last-years final projects? That sounds more like someone trying to pull a cruel joke on you. Christ, those people must feel awful.

So can we expect some last minute super Avant Garde artworks?
I'm sure arson counts as performance art.

Just about everyone's nightmare when it comes to final project. People were stressed enough doing Final Project in my 1 year Foundation Art class I dare not imagine what a couple years worth of work being lost could feel like.
Even though I don't study there I still feel pain knowing that such an iconic building, along with hundreds of student's works going up in flames.
Truly horrible, I feel so sorry for those that have lost all their work.

Another not, for those not reading in-depth:
Fire started in the basement, going up through all five floors
That should put into perspective the amount of work lost.

Not to mention the important historical architecture..
i blame the ghost of hitler
The final masterpiece
Know a couple of people who have been studying there, think they are now in year 2, but I haven't heard if they have been directly effected by the fire as its only in a specific part of the fairly large campus.

I'm going to print these out and mount them, so I can own the elusive 'shit on a canvas' everyone thinks they'd win the art world over with
I had two interviews here whilst I was applying for architecture. From the basement to the top the building is packed full of heritage and students work. Such a great loss
Was just speaking to my mum on the phone about it. I got a lump in my throat and she was near tears..
Can't imagine how students are feeling.

Joke will be on you when you die and they sell for millions.

I googled "shit on a canvas" and got this.
The mythology surrounding this painting is rich and confusing, beginning in the previous year, when Ofili was still a student at the Royal College of Art, London. He took a British Council sponsored trip to Zimbabwe, picking up on both the sacred nature of elephant dung in the country, and also on the excessively rich dot technique used in the cave paintings of the Matopos Hills. On his return, Ofili further explored the connotations of this new material, buying an advert in Frieze that featured simply the bold text ‘ELEPHANTSHIT’, and creating readymade graffiti stickers with the same phrase, which he stuck all over London.
It's just so stereotypically artsy.
The things students will do to avoid an exam. [sp]joke[/sp]
This is terrible though, I can't even imagine what it's like for people who have worked and studied here for years. Apparently the library has been lost as well. So gutted.
Firefighters battling the blaze at Glasgow School of Art's Mackintosh building say they have prevented the destruction of both the structure and the majority of its contents.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews are continuing work to fully extinguish the fire and save artworks.
The fire service said more than 90% of the structure was viable and they had protected up to 70% of the contents.
Here's what the library looked like:

I feel like the students who lost their work for the final should just get the degree anyways.

It's a wonderful building, one of the best Art Nouveau buildings in the UK:

Well, I'd imagine they'd get a classification based on their work so far, or they might exclude the marks from that final project when they tote up their final marks for classification.

makes me wonder if the pressure got to someone..
God, that's awful to have all of the pieces you and your mates have been working on over the years to just burn up.
It's hard to lose something special that you put hundreds of hours of time and effort into.
makes me wonder if the pressure got to someone..
From what I read, it was a projector catching fire near some expanding foam.

Naw actually its that some folk can't tell the difference between a joke and an actual thought, away and suck a fuck.
I wouldn't really call putting "[sp]joke[/sp]" in a post to differentiate the section of the post which is a joke from the rest of the post "desperately having to explain myself" either ya skudbook.
The final masterpiece
Someone got so creative that not even the building could stand it.
From what I read, it was a projector catching fire near some expanding foam.
well yeah, when my real dad burned down our house he put a cardboard box under the water heater to make it look like an accident. It could still have been intentional.
(it was the gasoline that he poured all over everything that gave him away :v:)
