Apple today has released iOS 4.0.1 in a bid to fix the reception issue which has been plaguing iPhone 4 users since its launch last month. This new update addresses the reception issue which is experienced which the phone is tightly griped in the left hand.
iOS 4.0.1 is fully supported on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. iPhone 3G is also supported but the users are officially unable to do multitasking and wallpapers unless you know where to look for it. An iPad version of iOS 4 is also expected to be released by fall 2010.
To update to iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone, all you need to do is to connect your iPhone with your computer via USB and start iTunes. You should now see a message as shown below. Simply click on “Download and Install” button to get on to the new iOS 4.0.1 firmware.
Note: Except for iPhone 4, all iPhone jailbreakers and unlockers are highly recommended to stay away from this release. This release contains new baseband 05.13.05 which will not work with ultrasn0w 0.93. If you rely on an unlock and updated to this firmware now, you will lose your unlock for God knows how long. You have been warned!
I bet they just boosted power to the antennas thus creating more power drain :colbert:
still hoping for a mc model jailbreak
There is no reason to update as of now, AFAIK, the update only improves the technique of the iPhone displaying the reception bars.

Then that would violate what they say online about their battery life.

The apple way ;)
this update isn't about fixing the antenna problem
Yes it is^^
so what else does this change/fix aside from the antenna?
Most likely nothing. Apple tends to do that.
Yes it is^^
no it isn't, what are you talking about? The antenna issue is hardware side, this update has changed the way that signal strength is calculated by the OS, thus giving you more accurate representation in bars. Explain to me how you think a software update can fix a hardware issue?

it doesn't fix the antenna
it doesn't fix the antenna
1. Unless you've tested it just be quiet, even though you're more than likely right.
2. You know what I meant.

You can't fix a hardware issue with a software update.
You can't fix a hardware issue with a software update.
You mean how hardware interacts. Yes you can. There is no faulty hardware in iPhone 4.
And as for the people saying this would fix the issue, it doesn't, I just tried it.

Look I'm sorry but if you think that a software update is going to fix a hardware issue, you're an idiot (note that not everyone is having reception problems, some people are getting better reception than with their previous iPhone, a lot of the tech blogs have talked about it and the problem is inconsistent and at varying intensity for different people, here's a nice article about it)
wikipedia is the only source I can find that has anything like a changelog:

it's a hardware design issue to be more specific

Yes. I know. What I meant is for arguments sake, just be quiet. It's quite annoying with every thread turning into a discussion about the reception issue.

well if the OP is dumb enough to set it out as one of the discussion points of the thread when it has nothing to do with the thread it gets discussed i'm afraid

...yeah I'm pretty sure PieClock meant this was Apple's way of fixing the antenna, despite it not being a software problem. You misunderstood him.

I don't see how but whatever. There's going to be a press conference tomorrow and they'll reveal whatever magical solution they have for it or if there'll be a recall or whatever.
You said
this update isn't about fixing the antenna problem
But that was what this update was about. It just didn't help at all or solve the problem.

While that's true, at the time I said that thinking there was more to discuss than the antenna (a bigger changelog) but apparently not.

.
Just an FYI: You can still grab your SHSH files for 4.0 from Apple, but they'll be cutting it off very soon, so backup yours now.

It's a few clicks, do it even if you don't plan on jailbreaking.
I just tried to lose reception and I couldn't.
If you're going to do an exact copy and paste of an article at least attribute it properly.

Shut the fuck up dude. This was obviously Apple's "attempt" at fixing the problem, even though it obviously cannot do anything to fix a hardware problem.
To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength.
Its more of a visual pleasing update for those that are anal about their bars of reception
